THE COTHRON FAMILY

This is one of the most numerous families in Macon County. The nameis spelled in variou s ways. Practically a11 the Macon County Cothronsspell The name as above given. In Smith Coun ty, there is a family' whichspells its name Cothern. However, they were once called as if th e namewere spelled Cawthon. In fact there is a post office in Georgia of thatname and also on e in Texas. There was onc e a minister of the ChristianChurch in Wilson County who spelled hi s name Cawthorn. We often wonderedif the original spelling was not Cawthorne. We do not kno w but supposethe family is of English d escent.

The first of the Cothern family of Smith County of whom we have any.record was Hiram Cothern , born about 1790, but place unknown. He married.Candace Davis Gregory, widow of John Gregory , a brother o f the editor'sgreat-great grandfather Jerry Gregory. Johtt died about 1815 an d laterhis widow married Cothern. Hiram had one brother but his name is notknown. He marrie d a. Sanders. One son of this man was David Cothern, who.also married a Sanders.

The first of the Cothron famil y of whom we h ave any record wasRobert Cothron, who was born in North Carolina, leaving ther e about 1816and coming to what is now Macon County. He had a twin sister, SusanCothron, wh o remarried in North Carolin a.
He is reported to have come from White County of that name. Robert diedin 1873 as an old man.
