Information concerning the William Hall Family came from Aunt MargaretRussell Boyd who marrie d Robert Murray Boyd, brother of Lula Mae BoydHall. This collector received the informatio n from Diane H all-O'Dell,
Hall-Boyd Family Records by Diane Hall-O'Dell
My grandparents are dead. So I rely upon my Grandma Vina Hall's familytree notes and my fathe r's memory (my father's siblings are dead). Mygrandmother's Hall family source was Maudie Hal l. Maude liv ed with herAunt Margaret RUSSELL BOYD after Lula Mae (her mother) left Boss (her father). I hope I haven't confused you. Aunt Margaret RUSSELL BOYDmarried Robert Murray BOYD , brother to Lula Mae BOY D HALL. The RobertBOYDs lived in a house in Nashville, Tennessee. A fter he died in anaccident, she took in roomers. My paternal grandparents, Bennie and VinaHAL L, lived with Boss HALL in Murfreesbo ro for a short time after theymarried in 1919 and the n lived with Aunt Margaret for a few years beforemoving to Detroit, Michigan before my dad wa s born in 1924. Bennie andVina Hall's closest frie nds in Michigan were Gustin and Rena RUSS ELL,related to Margaret RUSSELL BOYD. Bennie first worked at the Fordfactory. Later, he an d Guston worked as street car conductors for the DSR(Detroit Stre et Railway) Many of the Ha ll relatives lived with Bennie &Vina temporarily upon coming to Detroit until they had a jo b andsomeplace to live.
Growing up, my father saw more of his mother's family than his dad's. Hisstrongest memory o f his Grandfather Boss was his banjo playing. My dadlaughs at the idea his Grandfather Boss l it cigars with $100 bills. Fromreferences others made, Dad always thought his Grandfather Bos s was 'dirtpoor'. My Grandfather, Bennie Hall, had told me his father raised andbridle brok e mules to sell to the U.S . Army, and the family wasn't verywell off. I understand they wer e Methodists. (My grandmother, Vina Hall, was a Southern Baptist and had a rather jaundiced vi ew of herfather-in-law and brothers-in -law Hall, feeling they were a badinfluence on her hus band, Benjamin Hall.) From all accounts, they knewhow to have a good time. Most were not lon g lived.
From what we know, Lula Mae left Boss before Ben & Vina lived with Boss, and Maudie (& Lula) h ad gone to live with Aunt Margaret Boyd inNashville. Lula Mae eventually moved to Detroit. W e have no kn owledgeof her remarrying. My Dad remembers going to her funeral when he wasfour teen. We have her funeral memorial record from the funeral home (seebelow), and there's no me ntion of a husband.
I remember as a child my (Great) Uncle John HALL, a barber by trade, asalways laughing and jo king around. When they lived in Detroit, he andhis wife, Ola, would come to play canasta wit h my grandpa rents. My Dadand I agree, it was always a treat to see Uncle John who had a grea tsense of humor and was always telling jokes. He enjoyed drinking andplaying cards for money , both of which my grandm other disapproved. Theyhad a daughter, Gladys. They later relocate d to the Nashville, Tennesseearea.
Uncle Robert HALL was a character. He was good natured, but could reallystretch the truth. H e liked to appear well-off. Perhaps he got that fromhis father, Boss (in reference to the com ment about Bo ss lighting acigar with a $100 bill). I remember my grandfather Bennie HALL asf riendly and easy-going. He would give a stranger the shirt off his backand loved to talk wit h people, especially the l adies. The men in thatfamily all appeared to have a eye for the la dies.
Many thanks to Diane for adding character and color as well as detail to the Hall family.
