Herbert Winkler was a very talented man. He served as a generalcontractor and constructed ma ny building, church buildings, fine stables,houses in Nashville and surrounding area such a s Dickson and even inDecatur, GA. He was a noted preacher of the Church of Christ, elder of the Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ from 1921 until November 2, 1958,author of several book s including The Elder. H e was married threetimes. He out lived them all.

In 1921 when he had just finished construction on the Charlotte AvenueChurch of Christ buildi ng his house on Idaho in Nashville burned. Mostall of the family pictures were destroyed. A t this time t hey kept a cowand chickens in the back yard. He just took the building crew ove r to theold house and removed all of the good material, stored it in the barn outback and use d the material to build a house on Nevada which remains theretoday where one of his daughte r still lives (2003).

In 1936 he built a brick home. During the depression, he moved hisfamily out of town to mor e economical housing and rented the house onNevada out.
