Graduated Harvard Univ. 1817, Jefferson Coll, Pa, 1832, and Harvard,1851. TYNG, Stephen Higgi nson, clergyman and author, was born inNewburyport, Mass., March 1, 1800; son of Dudley Atkin s Tyng, and adescendant of James Tyng of Tyngsborough, Mass. His father (1760-1829)was U.S. c ollector of Newburyport, Mass.; reporter of the state supremecourt until his death, and edito r of "Reports of the Supreme JudicialCourt of Massachusetts" (17 vols., 1805-23). Stephen att ended Phillipsacademy, Andover, Mass; was graduated from Harvard, A.B., 1817, A.M.,1820; stud ied theology under Bishop Griswold at Bristol, R.I., 1819-21;was admitted to the diaconate i n 1820, and advanced to the priesthood,March 4, 1821. He was rector of Georgetown parish, D.C ., 1821-29; ofQueen Anne parish, Md., 1823-29; St. Paul's church, Philadelphia, Pa.,1829-33 ; Church of the Epiphany, Philadelphia, 1833-45, and of St.George's, New York city, 1845-78 , when he was retired as rector emeritus.He was one of the founders of the Evangelical Knowle dge society and ofthe American Church Missionary and the Evangelical Educational societies.Th e honorary degree of D.D. was conferred on him by Jefferson college in1832, and by Harvard i n 1851. He edited the Episcopal Recorder and theProtestant Churchman, and is the author of: L ectures on the Law and theGospel (1832); Memoir of Rev. Gregory A. Bedell (1835); Sermons Pre achedon the Church of the Epiphany (1839); Recollections of England (1847);Christ is All (185 2); The Rich Kinsman; the History of Ruth, theMoabitess (1856); Forty Years' Experience in Su nday-Schools (1860); TheCaptive Orphan: Esther, the Queen of Persia (1860); The Prayer-BookIl lustrated by Scripture (8 vols., 1863-67); The Child of Prayer, aFather's Memorial of D. A. T yng (1866), and The Office and Duty eraChristian Pastor (1874). He died at Irvington-on-the H udson, N.Y., Sept.4, 1885. DR.
