Quarles pedigree part two
Post by Joseph Quarles on Aug 22, 2006, 2:37am

The first Quarles I know of is Turstin Filius Widonis (Thurstan FitzGuy)who was granted the l and of Quarles in the Norfolk area in 1086. The namestarted out as Hueruerles with the 'H' be ing pronounced with the hardSaxon 'ch' like in the word loch and written as Querueles. Hisdes cendents and the inhabitants of the small village are believed to haveadopted the use of 'd e Quarles' as 'of Quarles' over the years. Thesettlement never really reached full village st atus, and the small abbeyfounded there was abandoned by the 1500's. My half of the family ha d toflee the Black Death around the mid 1300's and settled in theHolt/Gresham area. The firs t mention of Quarles, as it is shown here, isin 1216. It is a land fee paid by Ralph Quarles , son of Robert Quarles. Ihave also found a mention of Simon Quarles, son of John Quarles i n 1190,possibly a great grand-child of Thurstan FitzGuy de Quarles, although Ihave not foun d real concrete evidence of this particular link.

The first known official Quarles, in the Angle-Saxon tongue, TurstinFilius Widonis de Quarles , (Thurstan FitzGuy de Quarles), appearing in1086.

This line is pretty much a direct lineage to me. A lot of peripheralstuff has been left out.

Today's lesson is on heraldry. To start with, I am sure you are aware ofthe fact that the Qua rles name is listed in the Doomsday Book, did youknow that we are also listed in the Visitati ons ?The Harlein Manuscriptswere the records of the "Visitations", a series of investigation s done bythe heralds of the monarchy. The survey was mainly of English and Welshfamilies. Ou r names were listed as being in the following counties,Bedfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Lo ndon, and Northampton. The mainpurpose of the visitations was to finally have an actual accou nt of allactual nobility. Nobles were all considered officers of the realm. Thelowest level o f Nobility was a Bachelor Knight. Most modern people havebeen laboring under the delusion tha t all knights ran around in armor andbore weapons. That is not all together true. Knighthoo d could be grantedfor academics, favors, useful service to the crown, and other unusualfeats , or just political reasons. The knights' people are familiar withfrom movies and stories wer e "Armigers." The essentially had a permit andthe money to equip themselves with armor and we apons. Many of them hadsmall private armies, any where from 40 men to a couple of hundred. Th eyalso could have duel titles, such as Baron, Duke, and Lord. Martialknights became quite num erous during the reign of William the Conqueror. What, you may ask, does this have to do wit h the Quarles family andheraldry? , because there is documentation of at least two knights, a ndpossibly a third in our family, a Sir Francis and his brother Sir Robertand a possible Si r John. The family coat of arms and crest (the littlesymbol of a knight's helm with an eagl e coming out of it) are registeredto them in Royal Roll of Arms. The actual picture and descr iptions takenduring the visitations are supposed to be on a manuscript some where.Knighthoo d or titles of nobility can only be granted by a ruling monarch. What I am getting at here i s that the only people that can officiallyclaim the coat of arms are the actual descendents o f those men.Traditionally, the title is inherited. Those actual descendents canreactivate the ir coat of arms and legally bear them. This is done bydocumenting your ancestors back to th e knight, submitting your case tothe Royal Roll of Arms College in England where the Queens H erald willthen assign the case to a researcher. Eventually you will hear if thecase is goin g to be validated and reinstated or denied. The coat of armswill have a minor change to it th en re-entered. I actually looked intobecoming a knight myself. Getting knighthood is done b y deed as well asblood line. I would have to do it by deed and proving my ancestors weresubje cts of the crown. My deed would be to graduate from college, withhonors, and cough up about f ive grand, and I would be accepted. I haveread somewhere in these threads someone is claimin g to be a descendent ofSir Frances. He is royalty and probably does not know it. Anyway, tha t ismy history lesson for today.

Okay, just to be sure, and in case anybody actually reads this, I willnow post the informatio n I have on the Quarles books. "Pointer andQuarles Families", written by Zola Pointer and pub lished by BaltimoreGateway Press in 1986. "Seth & Belle & Mr.Quarles and me: The bloodyaffra y at Lake Drive", written by William Rayner, published by Simon andSchuster 1973. "Three Quar les brothers", written by Maurine Quarles,1991. And last but not least, "The Burton Quarles f amilies" or "TheQuarles Burton Families", I do not remember the exact order of that one.Tha t book is about William Pennington Quarles and his Burton son in lawsin what was White Plain s Tennessee, now Algood just outside of Cookville,Tn. The plantation house, monument, graveya rd, and a couple of statehistorical markers are in the area and off of Old Walton Road. Willi am P.Quarles was ambushed, robbed and murdered where the Walton Road crossesthe Dry Valley Ro ad on April 2, 1814 while returning from a meeting ofthe White County Militia in which he ha d the rank of Major."
The Quarles hamlet in Norfolk, England never really got to villagestatus. At first, and fo r a while, there were not very many of us. Thevery first official mention of Quarles is in th e year of 1086. The firstofficial Quarles died at birth. The small area of Quarles was grante d asa manor to Turstin Filius Widonis, in the Angle Saxon Middle Germantongue, roughly transl ated as Thurstan FitzGuy. The Quarles name is atopographical reference to the chalk rock quar ries in the area. The namehas gone through several changes. The original spelling was Hueruer leswith the "h" being pronounced with a hard "ch." The people of the areawere known as De Qua rles, or of Quarles. As to the origins of the peopleof the Quarles area, Norfolk was a provin ce of the Angle Saxon Empire. When the Romans finally began to pull out and eventually left en tirely, the German Migrations era produced a wave of especially combative groupsthat left th e Angle peninsula and crossed over into the eastern part ofthe UK, now known as England. The y got a foot hold in and eventuallypushed the Britionians back and they pushed the Welsh up i nto the Scots. They eventually settled down and their culture became more agri based. They last ed for a couple of hundred years, repelling waves of differenttypes of Vikings. What did the m in were the Normans. After a series ofbattles lasting several years the final blow came a t the Battle ofHastings. The Brits offered to help repel them. With the majority of theAngl e Saxon warriors and their king dead, the Brits eventually helped winthe war, but then prompt ly absorbed the empire. They let the basicgoverning system of the Heptarchy remain, but thei r loyalty was toBriton. Our ancestors helped create the modern English language; they areth e people of Beowulf. They worshipped Odin, Thor, and the rest of theScandinavian pantheon, al ong with the Swedish, the Danes, and many otherGerman tribes, until Christianity came along . Even now in the Norfolkarea there are dialects of English that the rest of the UK can barel yunderstand.
