Picture of Isaac Goodnight and of the old homestead, newspaper articles, and write-up about fa mily homestead furnished by Donald Collins.

The Isaac Goodnight homestead was probably one of the oldest homes inWarren County, if not th e oldest. It was quite a mansion for its day, atwo story structure with eighteen inch thick w alls, two re cessedpanelled front doors and large chimneys at each end. The inside was builtt o accommodate boys and girly and keep them separated as there is aclosed stairway on each sid e and no connecting door on the second floor. The massive fireplaces were still there and th e chair rails remainedthrough the years, as well as the panelling under the staircases.

This house burned about 1976. It was replaced with another house. DonCollins saw the origina l house before it burned.

The house was built by Isaac Goodnight, a tanner and farmer by trade and a
large slave owner. He and his slaves make the bricks for the house. Histombstone reveals tha t he was born in 1782 and tradition in the family isthat he was the first white child born i n Kentucky. (I believe this hasbeen proven wrong.)

In his youth Isaac Goodnight was bound out to learn the tanner and saddlemakers trade, an occ upation he continued until his death.

In 1805 he married Elizabeth McMurray, of Mercer County , the daughter ofThomas McMurray, an d three years later moved to Warren County and settledon the north side of the Barren River , in an area la ter called ThreeForks. According to Court Records he began buying land in 181 5.

Ten children were born to Isaac and Elizabeth McMurry Goodnight.Elizabeth died in 1827 and h e married secondly, Mary Gound. She bore himfive children. His third wife was Rhoda Gadberr y eight years o lder thanher husband. She died in 1860 after twelves years of marriage. Isaac certainly believed that it was not good for a man to live alone so hetook unto himself a four th wife, Frances Dickerson. She was thirty nineyears his junior and survived his many, many y ears.

Isaac's first three wives are buried in the family cemetery across theroad from the house, a s well as the old pioneer and a number of hisdescendants and slaves.

One of Isaac Goodnight's most distinguished descendants was the Hon. I.H. Goodnight of Frankl in, Kentucky. He was born in 1849 and attendedCumberland University, where he studied law. Hi s first vent ure intopolitics was a seat in the Kentucky Legislature in 1877. Later hereprese nted the Third Congressional District in Congress. Anotherdescendant was Judge Thomas Goodnig ht, of Allen County, who inherited thehome place on Barren River. He, in turn bequeathed it t o his son IsaacHenry Goodnight, whose daughter Mary married J. E. Moulder, The moulderslive d in the house making the fourth gene ration to reside there. TheMoulders had the original ti tle to the property written on Sheepskin andsigned by Patrick Henry who was at that time th e Governor of Virginia. In1950 the land came into t he possession of Mr. & Mrs. B. M. Smith , whocherished the tradition of the house.

When the Indians killed Isaac's father, Michael Goodnight, Elizabeth, hismother, was expectin g him. They had returned to NC to get their householdeffects. They were a part of a caravan c omposed of o ther pioneerfamilies who were guarded by 30 armed men. No serious mishap befel l thetrain until the train was within half a day's journey of the fort atHarlans Station. Al l seemed secure, but at mid night, Sep. 1, 1781 thefearful cry of the savage was heard follow ed by gun short, screams andconfusion. Michael Goodnight was killed in the first onslaught an d hisson, John was severely wounded, bu t he succeeded to make his escape.Mrs. Goodnight, wh o was in a delicate condition at the time, fled intothe dark forest. Many of the emigrants we re massacred, but a few escapedto the fort where the alarm was given. A party was made up t o search forMrs. Goodnight and she was found two days later in the woods lyingprostrate upo n the ground in a semi-conscious state, her face coveredwith a blan ket. She was taken to th e fort and four months later, Jan 1,1782, Isaac Goodnight was born. A curious circumstance, p reserved in thefamily traditions, is that from his birth until the day of his dea th,Isaac co uld never go to sleep without a cover over his face.

The youth of Isaac Goodnight was spent at the fort with his mother and hewas known as one o f the strongest young men and best Indian scout andfighter in the settlement.
