RUBY CHRISTEEN BOYD, age 91, of Murfreesboro, passed away April 24, 2012at St. Thomas Hospita l. Mrs. Boyd was a native of Readyville, TN, anddaughter of the late William Houston and Vest ral Nolen Pi ttard.

Mrs. Boyd is survived by a daughter, Nikki Y. Boyd of Nashville; sons,Earl Morris Strobush o f Hawkinsville, GA, and Michael Russell Strobush ofMemphis; a brother, Bob Pittard of Bellevu e, NE; a sist er, Ann Meador ofBowling Green, KY; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren . She waspreceded in death by her first husband, the late Russell Strobush and byher second h usband, the late Weber Boyd ; a daughter, Theyresa Renee©ØOØBerg, and 4 brothers, William, Sam uel, Robert, and Seaf Pittard.

Mrs. Boyd was a 1939 graduate of Nashville Central high School. In lieuof flowers, memorial s may be made to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson St.,Nashville, TN 37203. Inurnment will be i n The Stones Riv er NationalCemetery in Murfreesboro at a later date.

The descendants of Charles Word was taken from WFT Vol. 7 #4706 to show relationship to to William Cuthbert Falkner for those who might find it interesting and the southern humorist and author Lewis Grizzard, Jr.

Charles Word, son of John Word and Mother Unknown, born New Kent Co, Va.;died 1792 New Kent C o, Va.. He married Sarah ? Charles Word is called "arecognized Patriot" by Joseph Bulloch i n his book HIS TORY OF THEHABERSHAM FAMILY. All five of his sons fought in the rev. war two w erekilled. He was a slave owner in New Kent Co He was baptized in the samechurch attended b y Martha Washington

Charles Word, born July 9, 1740 New Kent Co., Virginia; died October 7,1780 Kings Mt., Nort h Carolina. He married about 1767, probably HalifaxCo, Va. to Elizabeth Adams, daughter of Jo hn Adams and of Eleanor Powell.Charles served in the French & Indian War at age 17 with Col . GeorgeWashington. He was also a Rev War soldier, and Died in the Battle ofKings Mountain N. C. D.A.R. #665220

Joshua Word, born February 8, 1775 Pittsylvania Co., Virginia; died 1853Franklin Co, Georgia . He married Amelia Hooper, daughter of James Hooperand of Elizabeth Chambers. Listed as a pv t. in 1st Ha rris GeorgiaVolunteers in War of 1812.

William Word, born March 16, 1812 Franklin Co., Georgia; died November26, 1881 Carroll Co. , Georgia. He married March 20, 1836, Campbell Co.,Georgia to Elizabeth Merrell Embry, daught er of Merrell Embry and ofDivine Howard.

Amelia Frances Word, born August 3, 1840 Campbell Co., Georgia; diedFebruary 6, 1921 Carrol l Co., Georgia. She married February 17, 1856,Campbell Co, Georgia to Benjamin Watkins, son o f Reese Watki ns and ofEllender Young (Nellie) Harris. In the 1920 census Amelia is listed as living with her Daughter Minnie and Son in Law Lokie Boyd in the Fairplaydistrict of Carrol l County. Amelia died as a result of a fall from thedoorway.

Samuel Gott Pittard, age 82, of Murfreesboro, passed away on February 7,2012 at Middle Tennessee Medical Center. Respected by all who knew him,he was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was anative and lifelong resident of Rutherford County. Samuel was a United States Army Veteran and served in occupation forces in Japan. He retired from the Tenness ee Dept. of Transportation as a Civil Engineer and wasinvolved in the planning and construct ion of much of the states highway infrastructure in Middle Tennessee including I-24, Highway 96, Old Fort Parkway and the John Bragg Highway.

Samuel was preceded in death by his parents, William Houston Pittard and Vestral Nannie Nolen Pittard; and brothers, William Pittard, Jr. andRobert Lee Pittard. He is survived by his wife, Annette Batey Pittard ofMurfreesboro; children, William Blackburn "Billy" (Helena) Pittard, Dean( Lori) Pittard, Samuel Neal Pittard and Monica Eve Pittard (Billy)Strine; siblings , Ruby Boyd of Nashville, Bob (Judy) Pittard of Bellevue, NE, and Ann (James) Meador of Bowli ng Green, KY; grandchildren,Colby Pittard, Katelyn Pittard, Ashlee Pittard and Zoe Strine.

A chapel service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Jennings and Ayers Chapel. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

James Boyd Gannon, age 91, of Murfreesboro, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012.He was a native of Ru therford County and the son of the late Leroy andAnnie Helen Zumbro Gannon. He was also prece ded in death by brother,Leroy Gannon, Jr, sisters, Fannie Bell Gannon, Mary Nell Arms, andEli zabeth Haynes.

Funeral service will be 10:00am Tuesday at Woodfin Funeral Chapel. PastorKen Polk will offici ate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.Men of the Charles Moore Sunday School C lass will se rve as pallbearers.

He is survived by his wife, Nannie Ross Gannon, sons anddaughters-in-law, James Ray and Sar a Ann Gannon of Murfreesboro, Ronnieand Linda Gannon of Eagleville, sister, Kathleen Gilley o f Murfreesboro ,grandchildren, Jeremy (Catrynia) Gannon, Amanda Perssico, Kristi Gannon,grea t grandchildren, Ashlynn Perssico and Kendall Perssico.

Mr. Gannon was a member of Northside Baptist Church, a retired carpenterwith Charles T. Hayne s and Farrer Brothers Construction Company, and alifelong farmer.

According to my records, my ancestor, John Word (b. 10/22/1738-1821) wasa brother to your Cha rles Word,Jr. (1740-1780) and Charles lived in SurryCo. N.C. They were the sons of Charles Wo rd, Sr.(1710 -1792)
and wife, Sarah. He was baptized at St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., Va.on 5/14/1710. Charle s Word Sr. was the son of John Word Jr. and wifeunknown, living in New Kent Co., Va. in 1710 . John Word J r. was the sonof John Word, Sr., who came from the town of Lanaff, Province ofG lamorganshire, Wales between 1623-1666 (probably in 1652) as a patenteeof William Gaulett, wh o also brought his father . Will of John Word recorded in Wilson Co., TN Court House Wills &Inventories Book 1819 to 182 4, page 167 with the following:

Wife: Fanny Collins Word with sons & daughters: Thomas, Elizabeth Dillion, Rebecca Byns, William, Mary Jennings, Fanny Jennings, James, Sarah McHaney, John & Nancy.

Will was made on May 25, 1821 and apparently probated August 1821.
John Word's will was proved Aug 1821 in Wilson co TN. In it he named the following:

John Word Last Will & Testiment

In the name of God Amen. I John Word of the county of Wilson and State of Tennessee being in perfect mind and memory calling to mind the mortality of life and know there is an appointed time for all men to die touching my worldly property that it has pleased God to bless me with my soul I give to God my body to be disposed of at the discretion of my executors hereafter mentioned, after all my just debts are paid. First if my beloved wife Fanny Word should live the longest, I give unto her during her natural life or widowhood all my land whereon I now live together with all my household and kitchen furniture and as much stock of all king as she a mind to keep, with such of my plantation utensils as she thinks proper, likewise six of my negroes to wit: Dolly, Jane, Amey, Dick, Abe and Joe and is she should marry she is to keep back two of the negroes her choice of them and still hold the balance of the above named property.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Word one negro boy named Jack.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my oldest daughter Elizabeth Dillon one negro girl named Amy. I also give unto my daughter Rebecca Byrn one negro girl named Viloh [Vilak]. I also give unto my son William Word one negro boy named Adam. I also give unto my daughter Mary Jennings one negro girl named Mary. I also give unto my daughter Fanny Jennings one negro boy named Jerry. I also give unto my son James Word one negro boy named Petey. I also give unto my daughter Sarah McHaney one negro boy named Stephen. I also give unto my son John Word one negro boy named Daniel.

It is my will that if I die before I can purchase a negro suitable is for the executors of this my last will and testament do buy a negro about the age of five or six years for my son Edmond. I also give unto my daughter Nancy Word one negro girl named Lucy, a good horse bridle and saddle a bed and necessary furniture then also a good cow and calf. It is also my desire that my above named sons John and Edmond to have of my estate each a good cow and calf and bed and furniture as the rest of my above named children had a bed and furniture and a cow and calf when they left me. Also it is my desire that when my wife Fanny Word dies if she should live the longest that the balance of the state which I have willed to her be sold and divided equally among all of my children above named unto them and their heirs forever.

Ratifying and confirming this my last will and testament revoking all other wills either by word, writing or otherwise as witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 25 day of May one thousand eight hundred and twenty one; further I also appoint William Word, James Word, John Dillon and Fanny Word as executors to this my last will and testament, signed sealed and delivered in presence of attests.
