Dear Sir:
The data which follow concerning William Nolen or Noland were obtainedfrom claims for pensio n and bounty land on file under S.30623, based uponhis service in the War of the Revolution . This is the r ecord of the onlyWilliam Nolan (all spellings searched) found on file in th e RevolutionaryWar records of this office. The date and place of birth of William Nolanand na mes of his parents are not gi ven. While residing in FairfieldDistrict, South Carolina, Willi am Nolen volunteered late in the fall of1780, served six months as private in Captain Charle s Lewis' SouthCarolina Company of Light Ho rse, and was in a skirmish at "the CrossRoads nea r King's Mountain." He again enlisted and served under CaptainsMartin and John Gray, part o f the time in Colonel Richard Winn's SouthCarolina Regime nt, was out in pursuit of Tories, a nd in the battle ofRutaw Springs, dates of this service not given. The soldier, WilliamNolen , stated that his service in all amounted to at least two years.
William Nolen moved about 1798, from South Carolina, to Russell Co.Virginia, and about 1819 t o Floyd County, Kentucky. He was allowedpension on his application executed June 10, 1850, a t which time he wasaged ninety-four years and a resident of Floyd Co. Kentucky. It was not statedthat these persons were related to the soldier. The papers on fil e inthese claims contain no futher discernable family data.
In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, name and addressof the person paid, a nd possibly the death date of soldier, you shouldapply to the Comptroller General, General Ac counting Off ice, RecordsDivision, this city, and furnish the following data: "William Nole n orNoland, Certificate No. S30623, issued June 21, 1856, rate $20.00 perannum, commenced Mar ch 4, 1831, Act of June 7, 1832, Kentucky Agency".

William Noland S.30623 State of Kentucky, Floyd County
On this 10th day of June 1850 personally appeared before the county courtof the said county W illiam Noland alias William Nolen a resident ofKentucky in Floyd County aged ninety four year s who being first dulysworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaratio n inorder to obtain the benefit of the provision made by this act of Congressthe 7th of Jun e 1832. That he volunteered in the United States Army inthe year of 1781 (or seventeen hundre d eighty one) under Captain CharlesLewis of the Light Horse Troops, as a private from the cou nty ofFairfield in the State of South Carolina under whom he served about sixmonths during wh ich time we had a skirmish at the cross roads near KingsMountain at which place I shot the ho rse of a British officer who was inpursuit of Cap tain Lewis who had been informed of the off icer by theForces and from thence we crossed the Laurel branch after which Lewisshot a Britis h Tory when the balance turned back. We traveled in thecounty between the county of Fairfiel d in South Carolina and the crossroads and in the neighborhood of Kings Mountain.

After the battle at the cross road we traveled over the counties of Broadand Saluda rivers, w hich traveling was done under Captain Martin, (whosegiven name I cannot remember) and whils t under the co mmand of CaptainMartin we heard of some Tories, and I was placed under the dir ection ofMartin to catch a Tory that I knew and had wrestled with when we wereboys, whose nam e was Elias Delaphmet but he outran me and got away. Weafterward joined General Winn or Gener al Wayne and I cannot state whichwas the name and General Greene where we fought the battle o f the EutawSpring in South Carolina, from the battle of Eutaw Spring we went toOrangeburg, wh ere I remained as a soldier about two months when theGeneral, Winn, or Wayne, said we were di scharged and I went home; when Iafterward joined Captain Gray, and marched under him to the _ ___ hillswhere we remained some three or four weeks; from there we marched toSavannah River a nd remained until the expiration of our time when we weredi scharged after having myself serv ed upward of two years but cannotrecall how much over as it has been a long time since. The d ischarge hasbeen lost or mislaid as I did not regard it of much conseque nce.

The number of the regiment I do not recollect. The reasons why he has notapplied for a pensio n before are these, he employed a person to attend tothe case and he wanted him to pay too hi gh a fee and he dropped thematter until now, at which time he is suffering from the pains o f abroken arm and pecuniary want.

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuityexcept the present and h e declares that his name is not on the pensionroll of the Agency in any state (or Territory).

Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.
William (X) Nolen
