SWEET HOME, Ore. - Ewell Hayden Davenport Sr., 97, of Sweet Home, Ore.,passed away Tuesday ev ening, March 23, 2010. He was born in Asher, Ark.,to Virgle Roscoe and Mary "Mollie" (Wheeler ) Davenport.
Hayden moved from Arkansas to San Antonio, Texas, in 1937. He returned toArkansas in 1939, an d in 1941 moved to Vernonia, Ore. He grew up on afarm and worked on dairy farms in Texas an d Newport, Ore . Haydeneventually settled in Sweet Home, Ore., in 1946. He started logging a s atimber feller in Vernonia and followed that line of work until hisretirement in 1977. He s pent many years working as a team with hisbrother, Harvey Davenport. He worked for Kellenberg er Logging, MurphyLogging, Rose Logging and Willamette Industries from which he retired. Hewa s a member of the AFL-CIO and United W oodworkers Union of America.
Hayden liked hunting, gardening, maintaining his car and truck, but mostof all visiting wit h friends and relatives.
Hayden is survived by his daughter, Joy Claborn and husband, John, ofSweet Home, Ore.; son, E well and wife, Debra, of Albany, Ore.;granddaughters, Kirsten Savage of Sweet Home, Ore., an d Kelsey Jenn ingsof Albany, Ore.; grandsons, Todd Claborn of Sweet Home, Ore., and EthanDave nport of Portland, Ore.; six great-grandchildren; sisters, GennieKoury of Rancho Cucamonga, C alif., Mary McChristian a nd Lucy Wideman ofBlackwell, Okla., and Opal Gardner of Elkins, Ark .; brothers, TomDavenport of Fayetteville, Ark., and Albert Davenport of Lebanon, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Lora; daughter, Laquita;parents, Roscoe and Mol lie; sister, Iva Gardner; and brothers, Raymond,Harvey, Otis and Truman.
Viewing was held 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 29, at Sweet HomeEvangelical Church. Fune ral service was held at 2 p.m., also at SweetHome Evangelical Church. Sweet Home Funeral Chap el handled t hearrangements; www.sweethomefuneral.com.
