William Faulkner's great-grandfather was called "Kunnel Falkner." He wasa colorful figure who se life was the basis for family legend and pride. As a boy William loved to hear the tales o f his exploit s during theCivil War. The White Rose of Memphis(1881) was the elder Falkner's major work, incorporating some of th e worst characteristics of melodrama, but alsooffering good characters in a fast-moving plo t of violence, b etrayal, and the rewards of true-love.
