William Faulkner's great-grandfather was called "Kunnel Falkner." He wasa colorful figure who se life was the basis for family legend and pride.As a boy William loved to hear the tales o f his exploit s during theCivil War. He read his great-grandfather's novels, too, including T heSiege of Monterey (1851), The Spanish Heroine (1851), The Lost Diamond(1867), The Little Br ick Church (1 882), and R apid Ramblings in Europe(1884).
The White Rose of Memphis(1881) was the elder Falkner's major work,incorporating some of th e worst characteristics of melodrama, but alsooffering good characters in a fast-moving plo t of violence, b etrayal,and the rewards of true-love. The novel was a great success, remaini ng inprint for nearly three decades and appearing in thirty-five editions thatsold approximat ely 160,000 copies.
William Clark Falkner, the Old Colonel, who had been killed eight yearsearlier in a duel wit h his former business partner in the streets ofRipley, Mississippi. A lawyer, politician, pla nter, busines sman, CivilWar colonel, railroad financier, and finally a best-selling writer ( ofthe novel The White Rose of Memphis), the Old Colonel, even in death,loomed as a larger-tha n-life model of personal and professional successfor his male descendants.
