HENRY DOWNS JAMISON
John C. Spence in Vol. 1 of Annals of Rutherford County states:

H. D. Jamison [owned a saddle shop on the] south side public square.
These shopsmade everything in the way of saddlery, buying stirups, bridle
bits, buckles, tacks, webbing thread, and many other things from the
merchants who kept all these articles for sale. . .

Henry D. Jamison was a respected citizen of Rutherford Co., often
being called “Esquire.” The Aldermanwere, for several years, “qualified by
H. D. Jamison, Esq.” He was born April 12, 1795 [probably Savannah,
Georgia] and died March 15, 1859. In a newspaper account by R. D.
Jamison, Brooksville, MS, November 13, 1911: “My father was a soldier in
the War of 1812, and a descendant of Col. Downs of the Revolutionary
army. My father, in 1835, bought a farm of several hundred acres of good
land southwest of Murfreesboro and lived there until 1858; left a large
family. He was buried in a cemetery on the Murfreesboro and Columbia
dirt road extending across the road to Panther Creek. . . a small portion of
this one-half acre of the north end is enclosed by a fence of large limestone
rocks for 2 feet in height and 2 or 2½ feet of barbed wire with an iron gate
for entrance. His grave is in the northwest corner of this enclosure and is
marked by a marble monument 7 or 8 feet high in rock base. I have often
heard him speak of being in the big battle of Horseshoe on Tallapoosa
River in Alabama and this was a great victory.

He first married in Rutherford Co. January 21, 1819, Elizabeth Batey
(died in February 1835), daughter of Capt. William& Ann [Bass] Batey. He
married second in Williamson Co. on July 23, 1835, Sarah W. Thomas. In
his will he names his “older children”: Mary J. Jamison, wife of Robert M.
Smith; William C. Jamison; Julia Ann Jamison, wife of Isaac H. Ledbetter;
John B. Jamison; Martha Jamison, wife of Elijah M. Shettlesworth. Other
children were listed: Eliza T. Jamison, Caroline Ann Jamison, Robert D.
Jamison, Sally G. Jamison, Louisa B. Jamison, Clark M. Jamison, James
H. Jamison, Margaret O. Jamison, Samuel T. Jamison, Albert D. Jamison,
and Richie Anna Jamison.

Jamison, Henry Downs, Jr. and Marguerite Jamison McTigue, comps. Letters and Recollections of a Confederate Soldier 1860-1865. Nashville, TN: H. D. Jamison, [1964]. (Note: After the War the soldier, Robert David Jamison, eventually moved to Nashville and bought an interest in the mattress manufacturing company that became Jamison Bedding, Inc.)

The descendents of Henry Downs Jamison & Elizabeth Batey are taken from WFT Pedigree #1591.

Some records indicate his death on April 4, 1795 rather than the 15th. Inany case, this resea rcher verified that the date on the monument wasrecorded as follows:

Henry Downs Jamison
April 12, 1795 - Mar 15, 1859
63 years 11 months 3 days
Here rest loved one till the great resurrection morn.

Recorded from tomb stone on July 14, 2001.

These are not fully conconsistent with the other records of a Henry D.Jamison listed in thes e notes who perhaps married a Sarah and whoschildren were Arrabella, Mary, Margaret, Gustavus , Orval, Eliz abeth,William, and Laura. Perhaps and probably two different Henry DownsJamison . This would not be uncommon if they were 1st cousins or whateverthat moved into Montgomer y and Humphreys Co., TN.

In the Jamison Cemetery there are five markers recorded in about 1971(not the Jamison Cemeter y near the Knob). These are:

Henry D. Jamison, Apr. 12, 1795, Mar. 15, 1859
M. C. Jamison son of H. (R.?) & (G.?) W., Oct. 8, 1862, Sept. 5, 1884
Richanna C. Jamison, Feb. 1856, Sept. 22, 1861
Jennie Leatherman, Dec. 22, 1856, Jan 15, 1863
Thomas J. Watkins, Nov. 3, 1836, Apr. 27, 1862

The cemetery is in the Fosterville Quadrangle 1/3 mile S. W. of CrescentChurch on North sid e of road surrounded by a rock wall. Marked "Cem:" onU.S.G.S. map. It is marked the Jamiso n Cemetery on t he Rutherford Co.,Chamber of Commerce Map.

Henry D. Jamison is mentioned to be the legal guardian of Madison Johns.

Unknown if this is related but maybe a cousin of not even the same family:

My gg grandfather was William Downs Jamison. There is a William D.Jamison in the 1820 Montgom ery Co, TN census. William D. Jamison islisted in the 1830 Humphreys Co, TN census. I believ e that where he livedin Humphreys Co. was actually in Montgomery Co. in 1820. I am beginning to believe that my William could well be the son of Robert. His childrensnames included: Arra bella, Mary, Margaret, G ustavus, Orval, Elizabeth,William, Laura, Nancy, and Sarah. These ch ildren's names don't exactlyfollow the routine naming pattern, but it seems that Robert's son ,William, and my gggrandfather, Will iam, were both in Montgomery Co, TN.When was Enos in Mon tgomery Co? Anne

My gggrandfather was William Downs Jamison. He was listed in the 1820Montgomery Co, TN census , the 1830 Humphrey's Co, TN census, and the 1840Dickson Co, TN census. The area where I beli eve he lived was in the samearea in all of the counties listed for the
census years.
