Nancy (Pitts) Hudson is Jerry L. Sanner's gggg grandmother. According toJerry, Nancy is sai d to have had seven children. Only Nancy and Blaneyare named. Matthew is assumed as he is fou nd in Rutherf ord Co., TN andwas born in NC according to the 1850 census on page 334.
Nancy remembers the privations she endured on coming to Sangamon Co., IL.
The first year they all shook with ague . The next year the "deep snow"came. Their cabin wa s built with the door outside. One morning they gotup and could not open it; the snow was dr ifted higher then the door. Byloud calls they attracted the attention of her father in law , who cameand shoveled the snow away and relieved them from their imprisonment. They were fo r a long time without tea, coffee or sugar and had tosubstitute hominy for bread. She though t that if she could only get outof Illinois
she would never want anything more, but would be happy for the rest ofher mortal life. Fou r years later herself & husband visited Tenn. Thehills seemed higher - she thought the ston e on the land h ad increasedten fold and the soil was a deeper red than ever before. Her chi efdesire was to return to Illinois and she has always been satisfied sincethat time.
Nancy Hudson describing a visit to St. Clair co. to see her mother, saysthey traveled in a on e-horse carriage over country where it yielded atleast forty bushels of green flies per acre . It was all they could do tosave the life of their horse by wrapping it up with bed clothin g. Afterthat they laid up in daylight and traveled at night.
