History of Family Gregory [Male]
Change: 17 JAN 2013

The Gregory Family

by Doris Byrd Leistner
(English, MD., Friday, June 27, 1986, Family Corner)

The Gregory Family originated on the shores of Loch Lomond, NorthernScotland, in the ninth ce ntury. The name was then MacGregor, laterchanged to Gregory. The family stayed in Northern Sc otland for s everalhundred years before part of them migrated to North Ireland, and latersout h into England. Eventually, some of them began emigrating forAmerica, perhaps tired of king s ruling them and thinking they would betree of it in America.

Richard Gregory was the first of the clan to come to America, toJamestown In 1620 on the shi p 'Anne.' This was 100 years before ThomasGregory, our oldest proven ancestor, was born. Thou gh it has be enwritten by one historian that Richard Gregory was the ancestor of Thomas,we h ave yet to prove the missing three or four generations back throughVirginia history. If you h ave Gregory ancestors in Crawford County, theyprobably are of the family in this written hist ory.

Thomas Gregory was born ca 1730. He was deeded 200 acres of land inHalifax County, Va., 21 Ma y 1767, on the south side of Bannister RiverIn southern Virginia, on the line between Virgin ia and North Carolina. When he and his wile, Elizabeth, sold this land in April 1772, he wasea rly settlers of this area were soldiers at King's Mountain. Thomassold his original 80 acre s of land in Chatham Cou nty, N. C. in 1797 andmay have moved to Tennessee soon after. He wa s listed on the SumnerCounty tax records in 11105. Bry Gregory seems to have followed inSepte mber 1802. There will be more about h im and his family later.

Thomas Gregory Jr. died in Surry County, N.C. in 1800 and his wife,Phoebe Jones Hawkins, die d in 1819. Their son, Tom, went to Tennessee, where he married his first cousin, a daughter o f Bry. Gregory . ThisThomas Gregory is often confused with his
grandfather, our Thomas Gregory, In early Tennessee records.Hardy/Harden Gregory is on the 1 800 census record of Northampton County,N.C., and was in Carthage, Tenn. by 1806, Abraham, Th omas' younge st son, settled in 'Robertson County, Tenn., west of Smith County.

Thomas was around 80 when he made his will on 13 July 1811 in SmithCounty, Tenn., naming hi s seven children (or their representatives) toreceive equal parts of his estate. At his reque st, his proper ty was tobe sold at auction as soon as practical after his death, and the proc eedsto be equally divided. His will was not probated in court until theAugust term. 1818 indi cating that lie died liste d as being ofMecklenburg County. He moved south to Chatham County , N.C. Ca 1779/80where he received a grant of 80 acres of land adjoining that of JohnGregory , his brother.

Thomas and Elizabeth Gregory had at least seven children, five Sons andtwo daughters, probabl y all born in Virginia. Bry, their second son, ourancestor, was born in 1761.

One account of Kings Mountain Battle (7 Oct. 1780) says that almost everyman in the area volu nteered to fight, Several sources say that ThomasGregory fought at King's Mountain, along wit h his sons, Bry and William.Thomas was a Justice of Chatham County in Nov. 1781, which show s he wasan educated man, lie is. said to have owned 1,000 acres on Parker's CreekBranch of Ne w Hope River, about nine miles east of Pittsboro on thepresent road to Raleigh, N.C., and oth er land near the Wake County line. The 1790 census of Chatham County, N.C., listed Thomas Greg ory Sr., alsohis sons Thomas Jr., Ha rden, Bry, and William as heads of households.

Our Gregory's moved from North Carolina to Tennessee during the 1790 andearly 1800s. Tenness ee was still a part, of North Carolina until 1796,when it became a state. The part known as S umner County was later dividedinto several counties, one being Smith County, where we find th eGregory's. It seems that William Hawkins Gregory, son of Thomas, was thefirst to make the m ove in the autumn of 17 91. He may have received landas payment for his Revolutionary service , as many men from North sometimebetween 1811 and 1810, probably earlier in 1818.

An inventory of his estate listed 15 Negroes, one bed and furnishings, one chest, one saddle , one kettle, one Dutch oven, one pair hand irons, seven pewter plates, two dishes, two bason s and one iron pofrack. At thesale, one of the slaves, a negro man, sold for $1366 to Bry Gre gory; anegro boy sold for the same amount. Isaac Gregory, a son-in-law, paid$472 for a negr o boy and Harden bought a negro woman for $124. For thatlow price, she must have been an ol d woman, not worth much as a laborer.Perhaps she had been with the family many years and Hard in was going totake care of her for the rest of her life, as men who owned slaves oftendid.

Thomas' total estate of $10,775.03 was a lot of money in those days. Twoof his children die d before ho made his will in 1811, Thomas Jr. and Lou.Records state that Thomas Sr. Is burie d in Nixon holl ow, Peyton Creek, and Smith County. Dry died 8 Jan., 1846 and is said to hav e been buriedon the Old Piper Place, Pleasant Shade, Smith County. William died sixyears late r and was buried on the Willi am Nixon Place sometimes calledPeyton Place. These may have bee n. all in one family cemetery, since oldcemeteries were often called by different names as th e land they were onchanged hands. We do k now these were all in the same area. No gravemarker s have been found.

Gregory Family - They Came From Virginia

From Marilyn Gregory Fisher

There are many theories regarding the origins of our Gregory ancestors. If
you search the internet you will undoubtedly find someone claiming that
our earliest known ancestor Edward Gregory married a young lady from
Massechusettes by the name of Miss Experience Robbins.
[Fact: Miss Robbins was married to a William Gregory.]
Another source will tell you that Edward Gregory was a convict and/or
an apprentice brought over from England to work in America.
[Fact: I did find an Edward Gregory listed in two seperate
publications as an indentured servant from England who arrived in
Maryland in 1775 onboard the ship Hope. I haven't been able
to determine if this is our Edward Gregory. BUT if it is, he would have
had to work off his indenture in Maryland very quickly in order to be
living in Virginia where his sons were born during the same time period.]

I have even found an elaborate story that tells the tale of how Edward
Gregory was shanghaied from Scotland as a young boy, forced to work
aboard ship and eventually deposited in America.

All are great stories, but none have been proven and in some cases they don’t
even fit the time frame of Edward Gregory’s life span. The fact is that so
many records and documents from early Virginia have been damaged or
destroyed that it has made the task of tracing our Gregory roots very
difficult. As much as we would like to be able to trace our ancestor’s
journey from across the ocean, if the stories and tales we read about can
not be documented in some manner, then we need to be cautious and not
accept everything we read as fact, especially if found on the internet.

So what do we actually know about our Gregory ancestors? We know
“they came from Virginia” I will even go out on a limb and say that
had Edward Gregory been a man of great wealth or a man who owned vast
amounts of land in Virginia, he would not have given it all up for the wilderness
of Kentucky. Meaning, Edward probably had nothing to lose when he made
the decision to leave Virginia. Most likely, his migrating to Kentucky
was an opportunity for Edward and his sons to finally become landowners.

Let us review here what we do know of the Edward Gregory family in hopes
of learning more about our ancestors from Wayne County, Kentucky.
