Joe's name was taken from a old friend of his father: Joe Vandergrift whostayed with his fami ly while they were growing up. His middle name"Anthony" was from the radio soap character o n "Young Wido w Brown". Joewould have been named David except for the fact that his parents m ovedinto a rental apartment who owner had a son named David so they thoughtit not best to us e the name.

Joe was born in Gallatin, TN and lived there for about 10 years beforehis parents moved to Ca mden, Tennessee where his father was transferedwith Genesco, AKA General Shoe Corportation . He grew up i n the smalltown of about 3,000 where he developed a love for hunting, fishin g andlife close to nature. He graduated from High school in 1960 and went onto the University of Tennessee where he recei ved his BS degree inElectrical Engineering. Between his Sophmo re to Senior years of collegehe worked for his Uncle Fred in his grocery in Lebanon, TN wher e he met Lynnette Winkler who became a clos e friend who he corresponded withduring his Junio r year in Knoxville. They married the next year andfinished his Senior year together at Knox ville.

After graduation in 1964, they moved to Fayetteville, TN where they lived for about 6 months while Joe started working at the Marshall Space Flight Center for the prime contractor Vitro Services. During this period, Joe was involved in the static test firings of the Saturn Project Rocket Engines (H-1, F-1 & J-2) as well as the Saturn Boosters & SIVB. The project ended with the moon landing in 1969.

After Vitro, Joe went to work for Teledyne Brown Engineering where he was project engineer for several Army projects that included the Safeguard Missle site security, power plant. He was also project engineer for the Video Test Set used on the Lockeed video monitoring systems.

He left Brown and moved to Milan, TN and worked for several years for ITT in the development of several computer controlled telephone systems. After ITT terminated their work in the telehone industry, he and his family moved to Mariette, GA where he worked for Solid State System in the development of several ACD, EPBX and associated projects. After 9 years, he then worked for BNR (AKA Bell Northern Research) a Canadian company based in Ontario, CA. BNR eventually became NORTEL and then Nortel Networks where he later retired when the company began moving their projects to India.

After retirement, he moved back to Tennessee to work with Sprint PCS to develop products and features of Sprint's wireless network. Due to the downturn in the economy, Sprint closed their door after 2 1/2 years and move all projects back to their headquarters in Kansas City. Joe again retired the second time.

After spending several weeks in their vacation home in Sarasota, FL, Joe & Lynnette decided to get their real estate license in Tennessee and immediately began working with Crye-Leike, Realtors.
