William Pittard [Male] b. ABT. 1808 Granville Co., NC

William PITTARD was born about 1808 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died in probably Cannon Co., Tennessee. We are unsure who his parents definitely might be: I think that he is the son of Elijah, son of Samuel, while Grace Swider thinks he is the son of Thomas M., son of John, from an earlier marriage. Margaret Yandell says that Thomas & Polly Norman were married as early as 1803, which changes the early marriage theory. After consideration of Granville Co. marriages during 1832-1860, only children of Thomas were married there. It still seems odd that Thomas would give three sons the name of William, though.

He was married to Mariah WEAVER on 11 Jan 1832 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Mariah WEAVER was born about 1813 in probably Granville Co., North Carolina. This woman had 2 children in her first 16 months of marriage!

John Pittard [Male] b. ABT. 1738 Essex Co., VA - d. 11 DEC 1820 Granville Co., NC

John PITTARD Sr was born about 1738 in Essex Co., Virginia. He resided Spew Marrow Creek about 1780 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Humphrey Davis took the Oath of Allegiance in Granville Co. NC along with the two Samuels & John Pittard.
He died on 11 Dec 1820 in Granville Co., North Carolina. (5) "Abstracts of Granville Co.NC", book 9, 1821-1824 p. 137. Copy of actual will also available. His will was was probated March, 1821, so he died between Dec. 1820 and March, 1821. Another record says it was probated May, 1821. He signed a will on 11 Dec 1820 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He was buried in Pittard Family Cemetery, Bulloch, Granville Co., North Carolina. (6) "Abstracts of Graves of Revolutionary War Patriots", vol. 3 by Patricia Law Hatcher 973.0 has the following entry: John Pittard, Cemetery on family estate, Granville Co., NC, found in 1946

He was married to Mary IRVING about 1761 in probably Granville Co., North Carolina. From a letter dated 29 Mar. 1920, from Oxford, NC, written to "Sue" from "Bettie" and says,
"I received your letter was glad to hear from you all. I want to go to Bullock as soon as Babe comes home, but I don't know yet when she will come home it will be several weeks yet I guess. She was not feeling so well the last letter I got but I don't reckon it was anything serious, she has been doing ______ all the while since the operation. This pen writes awful & I am just too lazy or something to go up stairs to get mine I got up feeling fine this morning but it seems I have ______ lost what energy I had for the last few hours; now about the letter to Sallie Pittard Allen we don't know anything except Pa's father was named Thomas and his father was named John, and he (John) married Mary Irving. & Lettie says there was only one Pittard who came from England and he had two sons. One married and the other one did not & we don't know who he married or if he & his wife was buried on pa's plantation out east of that house that Bob lived in. I can't write to Sallie I have so many to write to that I just cant it counts when ______ write so much. I am having ______ time trying to keep house can't get any butter at all. I wish you all would try to get some & send us a couple of lbs: it is mighty high. I don't know anything to write. Pet took Lettie out for a ride yesterday. First time she has been out she came ____ here and staid a while. I am thinking about going to Delaware if I can get any one to go with me. I hope you are all well: come to see us some time. with Love for all from Bettie"

Anne Bowden believes BOTH sons married, Samuel & John, as both left descendants. Mary IRVING was born about 1744 in of Granville Co., North Carolina. She died before 1810 in probably Granville Co., North Carolina.

Samuel Pittard [Male] b. ABT. 1710 Probably Somersetshire, England - d. ABT. 1785 Granville Co., NC

Samuel PITTARD Sr was born about 1710 in probably Somersetshire, England. He resided about 1780 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Humphrey Davis took the Oath of Allegiance in Granville Co. NC along with the two Samuels & John Pittard.

He died about 1785 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He was buried in Family Plantation, Virgilina, Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. This is the first Samuel Pittard, for which there is record, in, at that time and place, the American Colonies. He seems to be the same one as in Essex Co. VA 1727-1745 & 1770-1785 Granville Co., N.C., and more than likely, the father of the other Samuel & John in the same county in 1778, when the 3 adults swore allegiance to North Carolina.

He was an indentured servant of Thomas Waring, sheriff of Essex Co. VA, from 1727 -1733. Two generations later, his granddaughter married Young Montague, descendant of the Peter Montague of Jamestown, VA and the French Latane family.

From Legislative papers, Granville Co., 1782, County Line District, Samuel Pittard had 200 acres, 1 slave aged 16 - 40 years, 2 horses or mules, 9 cattle, 154 total ?.

From letter of Bettie Pittard, Oxford, NC (She became Mrs. Robert Ragsdale later) "Only one Pittard came from England, and he had two sons, one son married, the other did not. It is not known whom he married, but he and his wife are buried on a plantation near Virgilina, VA." From Anne Bowden's research, this is basically true, except for the fact of the one son not marrying. Samuel the Younger, along with his son Samuel and Samuel, son of John Sr., all seem to have lived in Caswell, Person, and Orange Counties. about the same time. I have the wills of two of the younger Samuels, and the third was still alive at the time of the 1850 census that listed all family members.

He was married to Mary NEWTON (daughter of Henry NEWTON Jr) about 1736 in Essex Co., Virginia. Mary NEWTON was born about 1720 in Essex Co., Virginia. She died about 1785 in probably Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. She was buried in Family Plantation, Virgilina, Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. First name found in Granville Land records.

Samuel Pittard [Male]

Samuel PITTARD Jr was born about 1748 in probably Essex Co., Virginia. He resided about 1780 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Humphrey Davis took the Oath of Allegiance in Granville Co. NC along with the two Samuels & John Pittard.
He resided County Line Dist. between 1784 and 1787 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died about Feb 1820 in Caswell Co., North Carolina. Caswell County Court, April 1823, Book I, page 212: Additional return of the estate of Samuel Pittard. Sale of tobacco by John C. Vanhook, by Archibald Rice, exec. Court July 1823, Book I, page 221: Settlement estate of Samuel Pittard. Examined by William Lea and William Lea. Five of his sons went to GA between 1797 and 1825 or so. In the year 1990, Georgia and Texas seem to have the most Pittards in the United States, descended from the five brothers. It seems perhaps his son Elijah & his children went to Rutherford, & Cannon Co. TN. Caswell Co. Court, April 1823, Book I, p. 212 Additional return of estate of Samuel Pittard. Sale of tobacco by John C. Vanhook. By Archibald Rice, exec. Court, July, 1923, Book I, p. 221 Settlement estate of Samuel Pittard. Examined by Wm. A. Lea and Wm. Lea.

This family's info. came from Caswell Co. wills: 1850 Oglethorpe Co.GA census & marriage licenses books A,B,C; marriage bond dates, Caswell & Granville Cos.,N.C.; Pittard family histories from Henry H. Byrom, genealogist, Mesquite, TX.

He was married to Ann Meredith DAVIS (daughter of Humphrey DAVIS and Unknown) about 1774 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Ann Meredith DAVIS was born about 1757 in probably Granville Co., North Carolina. She died after 1800 in probably Caswell Co., North Carolina. This was a page from a book which I copied in the early 1980's. I ran across it around 1991, and copied it to send to Trudy Davis Long, of MD who had shared a lot of information on the Pittards with me. As I was looking at the copy I planned to mail her, on 22 Feb. 1991, I attempted, from the dates given, to come to some conclusion as to Ann Davis Pittard's age. I concluded that the only Pittards, of marriagable age, in NC at that time were John or his brother Samuel Jr. Only Samuel Jr. had children by the name of Davis and Humphrey, Ann's maiden name & her Father's given name, names which continued in his line for many generations. From this, I conclude that Ann was the first wife of Samuel, at least until I get any proof otherwise. Her Mother may have been a Meredith, and she did have a sister Rebecca. Samuel Jr. & Ann's grandson, John Samuel Pittard, also moved to Chambers Co. AL, abt. 1845, where Ann's sister, Rebecca, & her husband, Ethel Tucker, lived. Samuel PITTARD Jr and Ann Meredith DAVIS had the following children:

+14 i. Thompson PITTARD.
+15 ii. Elijah PITTARD.
+16 iii. Anny or Anne PITTARD.
+17 iv. Humphrey PITTARD.
+18 v. Samuel T. PITTARD III.
+19 vi. William Davis PITTARD Sr.
+20 vii. Mary PITTARD.
+21 viii. Abner PITTARD.
+22 ix. Rebecca PITTARD.
23 x. John PITTARD(20) (21) was born about 1795 in Caswell Co., North Carolina. He died after 1850 in probably Monroe Co., Mississippi. In the Will of his father, Samuel, in Caswell Co. NC 1820, his sisters Frances & Elizabeth were left the rest of his estate and charged with caring for John. Not capable of his own care in 1820 in his father's will. Monroe Co. MS Census, 1850, p. 33, house #439, family #456, read 20 June 1992 This census was quite a breakthrough. In it, John, age 55, is listed with his sister Rebecca Malone's family, as "idiotic and blind". Obviously, she took care of him, and he moved with the family from NC to TN to MS. I had always felt that there was some reason, other than childhood, that his sisters Elizabeth and Frances would need to continue to take care of him, and this census verifys that!
+24 xi. Davis PITTARD.
25 xii. Elizabeth PITTARD(20) was born about 1799 in Caswell Co., North Carolina. She died in probably North Carolina. Will of her father, Samuel, in Caswell Co. NC 1820, she & her sister Frances were left the rest of his estate and charged with caring for their younger brother, John. No further record found.
+26 xiii. Frances PITTARD.
