Moody Word 84 of Summer Shade, KY died Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at his residence. Born in Barren Co. he was the son of the late Thomas Howard and Ettie Bartley Word. Mr. Word was a member of the Refuge Church of Christ and a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Army.
Survivors include his wife of 60yrs Emogene Ramey Word of Summer Shade; a son Tommy Word & wife Lanell of Summer Shade; a daughter Tina Harlow & husband Joe Harlow, Jr. of Glasgow; three grandchildren Stacy Fergerson and husband Trent of Bowling Green and Amanda & Megan Word both of Summer Shade; a great grandson Spencer Toms of Bowling Green; Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers Mitchell, Malcolm and Milby Word and two sisters Mauree Crabtree and Myrtle Bonner.
Funeral services will be 1:00pm Friday, October 30, 2009 at the A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens.

Milby Word, 86, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at his home. He was a retired farmer and a son of the late Tom and Ettie Bartley Word. He was a member of the Summer Shade Christian Church and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by one brother, Moody (Emogene) Word of Summer Shade; three nieces, Mary Jo (Billy) Adams of Summer Shade, Nancy (Don) Nuckols and Tina (Joe) Harlow, both of Glasgow; two nephews, Tommy (Lanell) Word of Summer Shade and Charles (Helen) Crabtree of Glasgow.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Mitchell and Malcolm Word, and sisters, Mauree Crabtree and Myrtle Bonner.

He was the son of the late Fred and Iva Lee Sharp Duvall, was a member of the Haywood Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Blond Duvall; two children by a previous marriage, Danny Earl Duvall, Bowling Green, and Donna Basil, Glasgow; five brothers, Robert Lee, Roy, James, Rusty and Carl Duvall, all of Glasgow; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephew
He was proceeded in death by a brother, Paul Duvall, and a sister, Dorothy Shipley.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hatcher and Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. The Glasgow Chapter 20 of the DAV will provide military honors.
Visitation is underway at the funeral home.

Note that according to William Faulkner and Southern History by Joel Williamson (1995), Faulkner's Charles Word ancestor was born in Landaff, Glamorganshire, Wales. Two things about this, though.
First, Williamson's citation for this is an item in the Ripley Public Library, Ripley, Mississippi, called "A Genealogy of the Word Family Written by James Word, December 23, 1882," which was provided to the Ripley library on an unknown date by one Eleanor MacDonald of Farmington, New Mexico. The Ripley library "has collected a vast amount of highly valuable relating to Ripley and Tippah County, the original seat of the Falkners in Mississipi." This does not suggest that Williamson's source represents the latest scholarship.
Second, most online Word genealogies appear to agree that the original Word immigrant came from Llandaff, but they push that immigrant back a couple more generations to a John Word supposedly born in Llandaff around 1650. A subset of these trees claim that the Words were originally from Scotland and merely sailed from Llandaff.
It does appear, at any rate, that there was indeed a Charles Word in Virginia, who died about 1792; who was married to a woman named Sarah; whose son Charles died in the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780; who had another son named Cuthbert who died in 1781 as a prisoner of the British on board the ship New Jersey; and who had a son named John who married Fannie Collins. We tentatively take this person to be both Patrick's ancestor and Faulkner's, wherever he was born.

I would like proof of this John Word, and John Word Jr. who m. AnnChiles. I have the book b y Mary Florence Word, "John Bryson Word, hisancestors and descendants" ( he was my gr-gr-gran dfather) and I alsobought a Word Family Tree from the Va. Archives which was a Xerox copy inf our sections that is about 28 inches by about 5 ft. very impressive butno proof for the firs t 2 generations from the i mmigrant John Wor (Word?) in 1652 to the birth of Charles in 1710 . Can anyone fill in this gapwith proof for the years from 1652 to 1710?

I am seeking proofthat he is descended fr om the immigrant listed in Greer's " early Va.immigrants" as John Words, sponsored by Nathani el Bacon, al so proof ofhis son John being married to Ann Chiles. All published reference s I havefound regarding this Ann Chiles spells her husband name as Ward. St.Peter's Parish re cords lists the birth of Cha rles b. 1710, and John b.1738, Charles b. 1740. Thomas Harrison Word, son of George W. and Frances (Gregory) Word, wasborn in 1814 in Bucking ham County, Virginia, and died before 1870. Hemarried his first cousin, Miss Caroline Word, p robable daug hter of JohnF. and Elizabeth Word, on Feb. 10, 1846 in Buckingham County. The Re v. J.H. Fitzgerald was the officiating minister. Caroline was born circa 1817,and was alive w hen the census was taken in 1880. Thomas and his familywere members of Mt. Tabor (Enon) Bapti st Church in Buckingham County. Hewas an active churchman, serving as a delegate to the Jame s River BaptistAssociation in 1836. The U.S. Census listed Thomas was a carpenter. Theylive d on the south side of Buckingham Court House.
