Even to this day, the story is passed from generation to generation about how Mary Ann earned her family nickname, "The Boss". Her husband was a kind and humble man, meek and quiet; his demeanor was quite the opposite of Mary Ann's. She was an outspoken woman with a strong will.

She and her husband were drawn to attend a travelling carnival that had come to town. Carnival signs boasted a cash reward to anyone in the crowd who dared to step into the boxing ring and take out the carnival's proudest, strongest boxer.

Mary Ann urged and cajoled her husband to climb into the ring and bring home the precious cash prize. George declined her every plea. When she saw that her efforts were wasted, with a huff, she herself climbed into the ring with the startled boxer. There, in the center ring, she made short work of him, leaving with cash in hand.

Mary Ann preceded her husband in death; she died only days before her 80th birthday on 11 Aug 1924. Her husband followed shortly thereafter on 20 March 1926.
