James Wylie Kemp [Male] b. 22 SEP 1849 Smith Co., TN - d. 25 JAN 1928 Pleasant Shade, Macon Co., TN
Change: 17 JAN 2013

Will Gregory Cemetery, Macon Co., TN

Cal's Column December 22, 1949

On another occasion, our good friend of other years, Uncle Willie Kemp, the father of Marlin , Jesse, Wylie, and Harvey Kemp, lived then on theupper part of Peyton's Creek in this count y, at the same place nowoccupied pied by Harvey Kemp. He had not long before built a large fe edbarn, one shed of which had eaves that were only about six feet from theground. One Christm as day when the Kemp fami ly was all away from home, our good friend, Henry Oldham, later on e of our leading Baptistministers, and a number of youthful buddies, passed by the Kemp home. Noticing that nobody was at home and se eing the new barn and also therunning gear of a bran d new two-horse wagon, Oldham said, "Boys, let'stake Uncle Willie's wagon on top of his new b arn and put it together andleave it there." This sui ted his buddies to a "t" and they procee ded todismount from their horses or mules and began to work with a zeal worthyof a better cau se. They took the wagon wheels off, uncoupled the frontaxle from the rear, took out the wago n tongue and lifted and draggedparts of the wagon th the top of the barn. The axles and hound s werecarried up first, then the wheels and on the very top of the barn theyassembled the wag on piece by piece, with the front wheels of the wagon onone side of the comb or top of the ba rn, and the hind wheels on theopposite side of the roof. This left the wagon in a posit io n from whichit would not fall or dislodge itself. To complete the job, the boyspulled up th e wagon tongue and put it into position, the tongue extendingout into the air many feet abov e the ground . The boys rode away, perhapswithout a twinge of consciences hurting them.
When the owner returned home, one of the first things to greet hissight was that new re d wagon on the very top of his new barn. He goondecided that the only thing to do was to cal l in his neigh bors, whofreely cane and helped to remove, `piece by piece, that new wagon th athad spent the night on the top of the barn. Uncle Willies got a greatkick out of this and d id not seek to retaliate a gainst the pranksters inany way whatever. It was all just a part o f the fun and jolliness ofobserving Christmas in the years that have gone, we suppose, foreve r.
