Josephine Lodi Hoover [Female] b. 12 DEC 1905 TN - d. 10 JUL 2008 Northfield, Rice Co., Minnesota
Josephine Lodi Spaulding, age 102, of Northfield, died Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Three Links Care Center in Northfield.
Lodi was born Dec. 12, 1905, at home in Beech Grove, Tenn., the daughter of Dr. John and Sallie (Shelton) Hoover. She was the youngest of four daughters and was taught at home for the first few years. She then attended the local high school before going away to boarding school. Lodi then received a teaching degree from Middle Tennessee State College in Murfreesboro. She taught school in Beech Grove until her marriage to Robert Cecil Spaulding on Christmas Day in 1933.
Lodi and Bob lived in his home town of Decherd, Tenn., where he taught agriculture and where their daughter Bobby Jo was born. In 1942 they moved Chattanooga, Tenn., where she returned to teaching first grade when Bobby Jo turned 10. She retired teaching after about 30 years and she and Bob enjoyed traveling to many different parts of the world. They were among the first tourists to go into China after it was opened to outsiders. They continued to travel until Bob's health began to deteriorate and they moved to Northfield in 1975.
Lodi saw many changes in life, from horse and buggy transportation to a man on the moon. She outlived most of her contemporaries, but she never lost her smile and her eagerness to talk to others. Until her eyesight failed, she loved to sew and do different types of needlework. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Lodi is survived by her daughter, Bobby Jo, and her devoted son-in-law, Bev Brumbaugh; grandchildren, Monte (Angela) Brumbaugh of Afton, Minn., Shawn Brumbaugh (partner Andrea Hillis) of Minneapolis and Shannon Brumbaugh (partner Heather Mathewson) of St. Paul; great-grandchildren, Afton Kelly, Houston Brumbaugh and Rob Abel; sister-in-law, Nina Winton of Winchester, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; infant son; sisters, Shingo Sanders, Icherone Alexander and Souci Hall.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Northfield, with visitation one hour prior to services at the church. Graveside services will be at Mt. Garner Cemetery in Decherd, Tenn.

BACKGROUND: There were a large number of Shelton's in Rutherford County, TN in the mid 1800s, perhaps most prominently Jesse Ransom Shelton who served with Nathan Bedford Forrest during the Civil War. See http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=:2613615&id=I143985 for a good tree of that group. Still trying to connect our John A Shelton to this group.
DEATH: There is an index record for Rutherford County Clerk Records for a will for a "Shelton, John - Dec'd - Book 24, p403 (Will), p569. Book 25, p107, p357.
Book 28, p54." Not clear whether this is our John or not, perhaps someone could investigate someday.
CENSUS: There are 60 John Shelton's listed in the index of the 1870 census at Ancestry.com. Of which at least 5 are the right age and 3 live in Rutherford County. Identifying which one is our John Shelton will be difficult without some kind of contemporary heirloom, letter, note, etc.

Note:
CENSUS: Ennumerated with her husband in Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co, TN in 1930. Lists her birthplace as well as that of her parents' as Illinois. Birthplace also listed as Illinois on son Charles' birth certificate.
RESEARCH: After initially disbelieving that she was a daughter of William Harrison Wimberley as some alleged, a copy of her SS-5 from 1952 positively identifies her parents as William Harrison and Mary Wimberley. It is also notably for using the "-ley" spelling of her father's surname. Additional research on her siblings also suggests that her older brother John was born earlier than the 1900 census taker listed him. [Brad Larkin Jan 23, 2015]
