Notes for John Tennison:
Information received in the form of family group sheets from W. E. Cordell, 330 E Jefferson St;Pulaski, TN 38478
Notes:
Family stories are that Polly died giving birth to Martha and her twin brother Absolom. Nothing has been told of , John Tennison, except that he died shortly after Polly. Martha and Absolom were raised by their maternal grandparents, Mary (Tibbs) and Sherwood Strong and lived on a farm near Henry Castleman. Martha married Wash Castleman and some years later they brought Mary to their home and cared for her until she died. Sherwood Strong lived with Absolom & Lydia (Castleman) Tennison.
Just as her grandparents raised her, Martha & Wash raised a good number of their own grandchildren. These grandchildren called her "Patsie". It is said Martha broke her hip or leg in a fall from the house porch - never recovered and died several years before Wash

John Nowlan was the son of Donogh Hugh Nowlan. He was born about 1550 in County Carlin, Ireland. He had two known children, Daniel and Cahir. The family is probably descended from the O'Nuallain clan.
The O'Nuallains were princes of the Foharta, now the Barony of Forth in County Carlow, Ireland. In pre-Norman days their chiefs held high office under the Kings of Leinster. In Irish the name O'Nuallain means descendant of Nuallan; the word Nuallan means a shout or cry. The name was anglicised O'Nowlan, Nowlan, and Nolan. To this day, Nolan is among the forty most numerous names in Ireland. (History of Carlow CO, Ireland by John Ryan)
John O'Nowlan: his son; was called "John the Poet." Had two daughters co-heiresses: one of them was married to —— Beaumont of Hydepark, county Wexford; the name of the other was Anne.
No clear if this is the same John:
A John Nowlan: Of this family is John Nolan, who in 1887 resided in Dundas-street, Edinburgh, Scotland, whose ancestors were for the last century chiefly located in Ballinamona, near Ballycanew, county Wexford. On his mother's side he comes from two very old and respectable families, viz., the Gilberts and Dickensons, the representatives of whom still reside in the vicinity of Inch, near Gorey. Mr. John Nolan married in 1874 Jane, eldest daughter of John Hughes, of Killygordon, and had issue: 1. Mary-Jane, 2. John-Gilbert, 3. Thomas-Oakes, 4. Heremon-Hughes—all living in 1887.
