First, Williamson's citation for this is an item in the Ripley Public Library, Ripley, Mississippi, called "A Genealogy of the Word Family Written by James Word, December 23, 1882," which was provided to the Ripley library on an unknown date by one Eleanor MacDonald of Farmington, New Mexico. The Ripley library "has collected a vast amount of highly valuable relating to Ripley and Tippah County, the original seat of the Falkners in Mississipi." This does not suggest that Williamson's source represents the latest scholarship.

Second, most online Word genealogies appear to agree that the original Word immigrant came from Llandaff, but they push that immigrant back a couple more generations to a John Word supposedly born in Llandaff around 1650. A subset of these trees claim that the Words were originally from Scotland and merely sailed from Llandaff.

It does appear, at any rate, that there was indeed a Charles Word in Virginia, who died about 1792; who was married to a woman named Sarah; whose son Charles died in the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780; who had another son named Cuthbert who died in 1781 as a prisoner of the British on board the ship New Jersey; and who had a son named John who married Fannie Collins. We tentatively take this person to be both Patrick's ancestor and Faulkner's, wherever he was born.

Charles was born in New Kent County, Virginia colony. He was the grandson of English immigrant (and indentured silversmith) John Word Sr. His baptism is registered at St. Peter's Church on May 14, 1710, so his birthdate was likely only a short time before that date. He was likely the youngest of five brothers.

Charles and Sarah had at least six children, five sons and one daughter, all born in New Kent County. All five of their sons would serve in the Revolutionary War, and two would be killed. Despite relatively humble beginnings, Charles did quite well for himself financially and was a successful farmer. New Kent County tax records indicate he had 12-15 head of cattle, several horses, and (unfortunately) 5-8 slaves. This number of slaves makes it likely he owned several hundred acres of land, and probably raised tobacco. Holdings such as this did not make him part of the Virginia gentry, but he certainly occupied something resembling the colonial middle class.

HMS Jersey was the hulk of a former Royal Navy frigate, converted to a prison ship and anchored in Wallabout Bay, New York, with other similar vessels. The area would later become the Brooklyn Naval Yard. Overcrowded and vile beyond description, it is estimated that 8-10,000 prisoners died of disease, malnutrition, and exposure aboard these ships during the war.
