Individuals : Harper Jean Elizabeth
Jean Elizabeth Cothron was born on Stratton’s Branch of Macon County, Tennessee on April 21, 1932. She passed from life to eternity on September 7, 2014, living 82 years. She was married on October 29, 1954 to Glenn Barton Cothron, who passed away in 2011. Her parents, Herman and Nettie Jones Harper; her brother, Lenslie Harper, and sister Ova Olene Cook; also preceded her in death. She was saved as a young girl, and joined Long Creek Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member until her health prevented her attendance. As a young woman, she promised God that if he gave her children she would, like Hannah, give them back to Him. She kept that promise, taking her girls to church, with few exceptions, whenever the church doors were open. She and Glenn worked together so that she could be at home while he went to work. She usually sent her family off to work and school each morning after a hot breakfast of homemade biscuits, bacon or sausage, and scrambled eggs. Most evenings, she served some of the best pinto beans and cornbread for supper. She kept milk cows and tended a large garden until her health prevented her from doing so. She played in the snow with her girls, loved her pet dogs, enjoyed hunting dry land fish, and encouraged her girls that they could be whatever they were willing to work for. She was a faithful member of the Lafayette Rebekah Lodge until it closed its Lafayette chapter, the Lafayette Order of the Easter Star as long as she was able, and she volunteered at Knollwood Manor for many years. She loved frying or baking apple and peach pies for lodge, church, or other family gatherings. She entertained us with stories of her childhood adventures, which included walking to the spring for water several times a day, walking uphill both ways to Long Creek’s one room school house, being found walking the ridge-pole of the barn, and riding off the hill under a log wagon. She was also a writer. She faithfully kept a handwritten journal for over 50 years, regularly wrote her daughters when they were away for school, and to her nephew and cousin when they were overseas for military service.
