From the Manuscript Collection #278
Harlow Family

Eugene, Oregon
Notes from Mrs. Daye Hulin, April 1958
e Hulin, April 1958
George Byrn Day had four brothers and three sisters: John Gillespie Day, Henry Day, Polly Day Brandon, Ann Day Crowder, Nancy Day Gregory, James Day and William Day.
His mother died in 1840. His father kept the children together and brought up the family.
A number of relatives, including his uncle Jacob Gillespie, moved to Bates County, Missouri about the middle of the century, George B. Day, with his oldest brother, John Gillespie Day, came to Missouri, and in 1852, crossed the plains to Oregon with "Uncle Jake" [Rev. Jacob Gillespie] and the his family. His brother, James Day, later moved to Nebraska; while the rest of the family stayed in Tennessee.
After coming to Oregon, George B. Day made a trip or two to California with cattle. He spent two winters in the Indian Wars in southern Oregon. He never used his homestead right, as the law required him to live on his homestead. When he married, he bought a place east of Eugene. His only public office was that of County Commissioner of Lake County in the 1890's. He was a Democrat in politics. [Personal observation: Since he and brother John G. Day had two brothers back in Tennessee who served in the Confederacy, they were most likely true southern pro-slavery democrats in the 1860's.]
George Byrn Day married Adelia Harlow on December 14, 1859, the ceremony was held at the home of M.H. Harlow. They had 12 children: seven sons and five daughters; ten of whom lived to reach adulthood. They lived across the river from Eugene for a number of years. On account of his wife's health, the family spent some time up the McKenzie. Later they moved to near Creswell where they lived until about 1900 and where the younger children were born. He then traded for some property near Newburg, later returning to Eugene to live.
The last year of George B. Day's life was spent with his oldest daughter, Frances Day Stearns, at Prineville. He died at the home of his son, J. Franklin Day, at Carlton, Oregon on May 3, 1903, having been brought there a short time before his death. He is buried in the Howe Cemetery in Creswell, Oregon, beside his wife, who had died two years earlier, on May 30, 1901.

We speak from along personal acquaintance when we say that George Day has no instincts that were not good, was true and honorable in all his relations as a citizen. And the regret at hearing of his death is tempered by the thought that he had passed far into the even-tide — that nature dealt kindly with him on bringing the well-appointed life to its end.
