I really don't know when these snapshots were taken but I would imaginesometime in the 1920's . They are interesting because the peddlar was avery handy man to come calling. When he cam e down the c reeks all thechildren would run out to greet him. He carried flour, sugar, coff ee,sewing supplys and many useful and needed items. This would and did savea trip into town . Many farmers didn't have cars. It required time andeffort to saddle up a wagon to go int o town.

One incident concerning John Wylie Cothern and his wife, Mary E.Shoulders, familiarly kn own as (Babe) Shoulders, has come down to usthrough the years. We do not know if it be true o r not and gi ve it withno desire to "throw off" in any way on their descendants. Wylie had be enkeeping company for a long time with Miss Shoulders and he never couldget around to the poi nt to "pop" the question . Finally, so the storygoes, "Babe," as she was called, took thing s into her own hands. Thestory is that on one occasion when. Wylie was "paying her court" she began to tell him of certain couples w ho had gotten married, asking himif he had heard of th is wedding or that. In each case he had not heard ofthe wedding. After getting. his mind in t his chennel the young woman isreported to have sai d, "Wylie, let's you and me get married. " Thebashful young man is reported to have said "All right, I had beenthinking of that very t hing," The wedding followed shortly. Wylie Cothernwas. one of th e best men we have ever know n. It was she whogave the writer most. of this informati on about the C othern family, Shealso was well informed as to her husband's people, the Grego rys, and gavethe writer much of the information he has about his own relatives andancestors.
