WORD, JUDGE AND MRS. C. T.
Judge and Mrs. C. T. Word moved to Canyon in 1901 with five of their seven children; William C., b. 1886-1960; Lola O., b. 1889; Charles Henry, born 1892; Millard R., b. 1894; Walter D., b. 1898, Winnie Mae and C. T. Word, Jr. were born in Canyon. C. T. Word, Jr., died at an early age.
Charles Thompson Word was born Sept. 22, 1857 in Goliad, Texas, the son of Col. George G. Word and Amanda Tippen Word.
Mrs. Word was Laura Josephine Gregory, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. W. J. Gregory, and was born in Cooke County, Sept. 13, 1862. Rev. Gregory was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister.
Dec. 30, 1885, Miss Gregory and C. T. Word were married at Chico. Mr. Word was 28 years old at the time of their marriage and was manager of a ranch near Brady. When he was 11 years old his father died, leaving him to support his mother and widowed sister.
Two years after their marriage they went to a ranch near Taylor, of which Mr. Word was manager.
Mr. Word came to Swisher County in July 1890, buying one section and filing on another. Mrs. Word and their two children, Will, four years old and Lola, 16 months arrived in Sept., coming from their former home in McCullough County. Their daughter, Winnie Mae, said: "Mother dreaded the move and leaving her parents and other members of her family behind.
"Like many others who went to the West, she probably felt she would never get to return.
"She asked if she would have any neighbors. Mr. Word had assured her she would. They arrived at their dugout after dark. The next morning she stepped out to look around. Not one thing could she see in any direction. It tuned out that the nearest neighbor was five miles away, and was the U. S. Gober family. They became life-long friends, especially Lola and Frankie.
In the spring Mr. Word had lumber freighted from Amarillo to build a home. Two rooms and a lean-to were built down stairs and two rooms upstairs. The family had to be away just before the house was completed. When they returned the carpenters was gone and supposedly through, but when they went inside they found there was no stairway whatsoever. Mr. Word was somewhat upset and when he found the carpenter, the man said: "Well, I just didn't know how to build a stairway." It took a bit to find one who did. The family lived here until they moved to Canyon in 1902. Their lives were like most new settlers, filled with hard work, some hardships but happiness also.
"When the Word's moved to Swisher County there were only a few scattered dwellings and almost no other residences in the whole country. Amarillo at that time was an infant of a town."
Although considered an early cattleman in this region, Mr. Word had considerable experience in the cow business before coming to this country. He worked on ranches in McCullough County and in Williamson County.
Mr. Word worked for a half-brother, R. E. Word, in taking a herd of cattle to Williamson County. Later the two men operated the McCullough County Cattle and Land Co. They bought, leased and fenced about 50,000 acres of land. In 1889, Mr. Word withdrew from the company and came to the Panhandle the following year.
After securing a comfortable home seven miles north of Tulia, he began buying steers and buying, leasing and fencing pasture land. In 1892 and 1893, he fattened his steers in Kansas. He later fattened his cattle in New Mexico, buying thousands of head in that state.
While in the cattle business in Swisher County, he experimented in raising feed for his cattle and stock, spending considerable money in the venture. In feeding his animals he used Johnson grass, sorghum and millet. He fed a large number of his cattle during the severest part of the winter, and nearly all of them for a few days in February.
In 1891, the Swisher County Judge died, and Mr. Word was appointed by the court to fill the vacancy, serving as Judge for two years, winning a name for fairness and honesty. From then on he was known as Judge Word.
Mr. Word bought the Potter County Ranch north of Bushland and west of Amarillo in 1902, and he and his family called this the "Home Ranch". He also acquired ranch property in Moore County and in Donley County.
Judge Word had great faith in the Panhandle and was constantly improving his livestock and expanding his ranch holdings. At one time Judge Word, a native Texas, owned over 100,000 acres of ranch land in six Panhandle counties and owned 11,000 head of the finest Hereford cattle. He was one of the first ranchers in the Panhandle to devote his interests to the building and maintaining of high grade Hereford cattle. Word's name is synonymous with ranching in the Panhandle for he was one of the leading cattlemen of this section from 1890 until the bottom dropped out of the market in the early '20's. He exhibited prize winning cattle in Kansas City and other markets.
Although Word's cattle were not registered, cattlemen from far and near compared other herds to those of Mr. Word. "Are your cattle as good as Word's" was a common expression of the early days.
The Words moved to Canyon when their children were growing up. The children went to Canyon High School, and all but Will attended WTSU.
Mr. Word was a great believer in education. He always gave generously to the establishment of Schools and in 1909 when Canyon raised $100,100 to get WTSNC to locate in Canyon, Judge Word gave $10,000 the largest amount given by one individual. He offered acreage if the Normal would locate in the west part of Canyon.
They were faithful, hard-working and generous members of the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Word was always active in Church work and for many years taught the college age Sunday School class. They helped many young people to get an education.
Judge Word was a charter stockholder in the First National Bank in Canyon and a stockholder in the Canyon Supply Co.
Judge Word died January 17, 1938 and Mrs. Word died January 30, 1946. They are interred in Dreamland Cemetery.
One of the Word children, Will married Anna Lee Howren, and Millard married Charlotte Ingham, both lived in Clarendon. Walter married Ora Street and lives in Amarillo. Winnie Mae married G. C. Wescoat and lives in Amarillo. After the Words moved to Amarillo, Lola was for years secretary of the Amarillo Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Millard Ingham Word, widow of Colonel Millard Ingham Word, moved to Canyon in 1966, with her four children. Bringing back to Canyon the great-grandchildren of two of the distinguished, influential families of the pioneer days of Canyon, Dr. and Mrs. S. L. Ingham, Judge and Mrs. C. T. Word, whose fine Christian lives added much to the cultural development of early Canyon. Source: The Randall County Story From 1541 to 1910 (1969) transcribed by Mary Saggio
