Note: It is reported that one of Allen's sons went to south Alabama and lived with the Indians. I believe it was Ed who's wife is reported to have been a descendent of Pocahontas. A check in Jemison, Alabama indicates that this town has had 6 or 7 names but currently believe by residence that Jemison was named for Robert Jemison of Birmingham who was a hero in the war between the states. A book in the county seat is reported to give the history of the town.

Boyd, John Wesley (b. 5 APR 1845, d. 1898)
Note: The information concerning the John Wesley Boyd family was obtain primarily from Mose Boyd, Jr. and notes believed to have originated with Frank Boyd. In addition, information was obtained from County Clerks Office of Rutherford Co., TN. and Beulah Boyd had heard all her life that John Wesley Boyd was born in Texas and never heard anything about Georgia as recorded in census records. Others believe he was born in Tennessee. Tracy Boyd, a grandson of Benjamin, believes that he heard that John Wesley came to Tennessee from Texas with the Golden family. It may have been that John's sister married a Golden but this information is unconfiremed. We may never find the full story concerning John.

The following is provided by Thelma Delores Compton Smith:

John Wesley Boyd and wife Susan Ann Pitts Boyd gave birth to 15 healthy children, Susan Ann's grandparents migrated to Tennessee from North Carolina in the early 1800's . It is believed that John Wesley's family came from Texas. Susan's parents married Oct. 12, 1842 when her mother was 13 years old and her father was 21. Her parents were Mathew and Martha Daughtery Pitts. Mathew acquired a large amount of land when they moved to Tennessee from North Carolina. Susan was given around 200 acres of land and her father, Mathew built her a two story colonial home, a barn, chicken house, a outside privy and hog houses. He gave her some of the farm animals. Mathew was a very prosperous farmer and did this for each of his children when they married.
My father, Grover C. Compton told me that my mother's parent and her grandparents were on of the finest, kindest, hard working, respected, honest Godly family in the Pitts-Boyd-Compton Community. He felt honored that their daughter, Ida Dora Boyd, chose him as her husband, who also came from a highly respected Logan Lonzo and Battie Susan Owen Compton family.
The beautiful southern colonial home of John Wesley and Susan Ann stood very stately upon a small rise, with a front porch with large columns extending up to the porch on the second floor. This home was beautiful furnished with tall bedsteads with at least 2 or 3 in each of the 5 large bedrooms to sleep 15 children and Mother and Father.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1841 a Robert Boyd married a Mary Hopson. Robert Boyd was born September 18, 1819 in AL or SC. Mary Hopson was born in 1824 in Meriweather County, Georgia and it is speculated that she died in 1882 in Texas. Mary's father was Caswell Hopson (also seen as Hobson in "Georgia to 1850" and "NC to 1825" marriage records -- interestingly, there is also a marriage record from 1788 for a William Hobson in Caswell County, NC). Mary's mother was Polly Keeton (speculated to be from Upton County, Georgia).

Anyway, the Robert and Mary Hopson Boyd family moved to Texas in 1870. The couple had the following children:

· William H. Boyd (born in Georgia)
· John W. Boyd (born April 5, 1845 in Georgia) (As you know, this is the correct date of birth for our John Wesley Boyd in Rutherford Co.)
· Amanda (Mandi) Boyd (born May 31, 1848 in Calhoun County, AL, and died July 6, 1930 in Turnesville Pct., Coryell, Texas. She was buried on July 7, 1930 in Peoria Hill, Texas)
· Mary Ann Boyd (born in 1850 in Calhoun County, AL)
· Nancy Jane Boyd (born in 1853 in Calhoun County, AL)
· Robert (Pole) Napolean Boyd (born March 14, 1857 in Calhoun County, AL)
· Hugh Caswell Boyd (born March 14, 1858 in Calhoun County, AL)
· Mattie Judson Boyd (born July 12, 1866 in Calhoun County, AL)
· The names of two additional siblings are listed on another site: They are George Hubbard Boyd and Masuria Alice Boyd. The other eight
siblings are also included in this separate listing, and the parents are named as Robert B. May Boyd and Nancy Hopson.

Amanda (Mandi) Boyd married a Felix (Grundy) George Golden. They had nine children, including a son named Sam Ross Golden. Records show that Sam Ross Golden was originally from Alabama, and later lived in Bosque County, Texas. This information was in fact documented by two relatives of Sam Ross Golden on Genalogy.com. - provided by Tracy Boyd, Feb 6, 2003

Pitts, Susan Ann (b. 13 MAY 1850, d. 6 MAR 1925)
Note: Susan Ann Pitts Boyd was known as "Ann" by the family as indicated by Aunt Nell's letter. There is a picture of John & Ann Boyd. For those who have found a Susan N. Pitts in the records of Rutherford Co., the translation from script to type is incorrect. It should have been noted as Susan A. Boyd. Following is the obituary which was in the local paper in March of 1925:

Mrs. S. A. Boyd Dies At Home of Daughter

Mrs. S. A. Boyd, age 74 years, died Thursday March 6 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Zumbro on East Vine Street from infirmaries of age. Funeral services were held from the home as above Saturday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. W. F. Jaggers after which her remains were buried at the family graveyard near Pittstown.
Mrs. Boyd was a Miss Pitts prior to here marriage and was born and lived in the 21st district all of her life up to about two years until when she came here to spend here remaining days with Mrs. Zumbro.
She was a life long member of the Republican Grove Baptist church and had live a consistent Christian life. She is survived by numerous near relatives, the most of whom are natives and residents of the county.
Mrs. Boyd had fifteen children, all of who survived her. Two or three of the boys and two of the girls are in other states and cities but the others are all in this county. She had seven boys and eight daughters, all of whom were present at the funeral services.
This family is remarkable in the fact that these fifteen children are adults and a wonderful robust set. They range in weight from 180 pounds to 290 pounds. The three largest weigh respectively 290, 250 and 245 pounds. The aggregate weight of the family is about 3,500.
Her ancestors were among the earliest settlers in Tennessee and she was descended on both sides from stock to be proud of.

Shelton, Samuel (b. ABT. 1812, d. ?)
Note: This researcher has found little about the Shelton s of Rutherford Co., their origin and descendants. Shown below are additional notes which someday may be significant:

Shelton s buried in the Jamison Cemetery:

Martha J. Shelton, Sept. 30, 1842 - Jesse R. Shelton, Jan. 16, 1884 - May 14, 1940;
Samuel Forrest Shelton, Nov. 15, 1878 - July 28, 1969, & Arnie Frizzel Shelton, June 20, 1885 - Nov. 12, 1968, m. July 28, 1901.
R. B. Shelton, Jr. Aug. 12, 1931 - Aug. 15, 1931.
Jesse Shelton, Pvt. Tenn. Cav. CSA, May 14, 1910.

Also other Frizzells, Fulks, Eatons, Hoovers, Carters & Bells are buried in the Jamison Cemetery.
A Tennison is the oldest known grave in the cemetery. It is the pile of stones which is not marked. We believe it is Abraham Tennison, Jr., Caroline Fulk's grandfather, i.e. Lucy Tennison Fulks' father.

Buried in the Shelton Cemetery which is down the road on the east side is:
John W. Shelton, Sept. 4, 1869 - Jan. 4, 1946 m. Ella M. Shelton, Dec. 15, 1869 - Nov. 2, 1964.

Pitts, Matthew (b. 19 NOV 1820, d. 19 DEC 1885)
Note: Matthew Pitts parents unproven but commonly believe that Matthew Pitts was his father and Martha was his mother by family tradition.

Matthew Pitts is buried in the Rucker-Pitts Cemetery on Compton Road 1.5 miles from the Veterans Hospital. There are several graves but several have been moved by local agriculture. The cemetery is named after James Rucker, Jr. 1788-1850, the son of James Rucker, Sr. who is buried on the grounds of the Hospital. Family tradition indicates that several graves are located in the plot, however, only parts of three grave markers remain. The cemetery has been carefully examined and a total of 11 graves have been located. These are arranged in 4 groupings. Eight now marked with field stones. It is believe that some of these may belong to the Baird family who purchased the farm from the Ruckers. The dimensions have be established to be approximately 40 x 50 feet.

Next to grave site is the Rucker/Pitts home place. The home was built in 1829 by the Ruckers. There were 4 Rucker brothers who were reported to be of different faiths. After apparently James Rucker, Jr. , the owner of the property was John & Martha A. Baird. Martha became the sole owner after her husband passed away. She sold the land to Matthew Pitts in 1879. The land was just across the road from Matthew's brother's John Pitts farm. The road at that time was called the Browns Mill Road. Now it is Compton Road. After Matthew died, he was buried in the cemetery which is about 100 yards east of the home place. His monument is probably 12-14 feet high. In recent years it could not be seen from the road became of vandalism and/or the farming over the past 100 years. It has been re-erected as result of several relatives of the Ruckers and Pitts joining together to restore the site (1999).

The home now belongs to Bill Burgess whose Grandfather purchased the home originally in 1914. Bill purchased the house and 80 Acres in 1974 when the property was put up for auction. None of the other family members wanted the house at that time. The house is thus the traditional home place of James Rucker, Baird, Matthew Pitts and then 3 generations of Lufkins.

The house was being restored slowly in 1994 by Bill and his family. It has a half basement which is about 5-1/2 feet high. The timbers as very large and long cut true and show no apparent aging apparently due to the atmosphere created in the basement which is has a brick floor. There are 3 main rooms in the basement. The floor of the main floor show the underside of the lumber of which each board has been trimmed to make the upper floor level. The boards appear to be 6 to 8 inches wide. The supporting timbers appear to be about 3 inches thick and about 10 inches wide space about a foot apart. The foundation which supports the full brick outside wall is made from cut limestone blocks probably from a nearby area. There is a quarry currently within a mile of the property. The outside walls have two basic patterns. The side has a layer laid endways about every forth layer. The front is laid in a pattern of a end laid brick every forth brick. This is apparently to create the very thick walls of the house. There are 4 major rooms on the main floor, a large hallway and back porch area. They are currently two bedrooms, living room and a kitchen. The original kitchen was about 20 to 30 feet outside the house in another building as was the custom of the era. Only traces of the foundation currently remains. Bill has enclosed a back porch and enlarged the back area to add a modern bath. All of the floors on the main level have been cleared to the beautiful wood floors except for the Kitchen area which is planned to be stripped next. There are 3 rooms on the second level which are bedrooms. The upper floor is divided into two areas which may only be accessed by separate stairways. This was the custom of the area for boy and girls to have separated living quarters. The ceiling is very high on the main level and also higher than normal on the second level. The ceilings are beautiful exposed wood on the second level. The Lufkins were the grandparents of Bill Burgess.

The home as two wells and a cistern. The well has some sulfur content. The slave quarters is believe to be in the back northwest part of the property. The home currently has a galvanized steel roof, i.e. traditionally called tin. This information was obtained from William L. Burgess, Compton Road, on August 7, 1995.

See Fate Pitts notes for detail of census records and comparisons with Aunt Lell's letter written in 1973. The 1850 census shows Mathew, Martha, William, Anderson, Benjamin & Susan.

The will of Matthew Pitts includes 12 equal heirs &/or children for the distribution of cash. Descendents of Matthew Pitts indicate that every thing Matthew touched turned to money. He owned a cotton gin, a store, toll road and bridge over the Stones River. The area near the gin & store became known as Pittstown which was on highway 96. He gave each of his 12 children a farm. None of his children apparently inherited his touch.
