The following notes were received from Ron Helton via email on May 27, 1998:

Date: 27 May 1998
From: Ron Helton <RHELTON@@lrd02.swl.usace.army.mil>

I have my Like ancestors back to Henry and Alse Mann Like. The family legend has that Henry and his brother came from Virginia/West Virginia around 1800, settling first in Putnam Co., Ohio, and later moving on to Michigantown, Indiana. I located his grave and those of his sons in Layman Cemetery, north of Michigantown. About the time George Like, Henry's great-grandson, head south to Tennessee, George's parents moved to Spickard, Missouri. George's brother worked for Andrew Peter Helton and George apparently joined him, where he met and married Nancy Caroline Helton. Sometime in the early land rush days of the 1890s in Oklahoma territory. George and family moved to Oklahoma and homesteaded land in Woods Co., Okla. My grandfather, John Allen Helton, headed out to Oklahoma from Rutherford County, Tenn., around 1915 and found employment with George. He soon married Maggie Mae Like and had a thrive wheat harvesting business during the 1920s before an accident injured his back. In the mid- 1920s, George and Nancy moved to Saline County, where he built a grist mill and a stream engine to generate electricity, the first in the area to have electricity. He earned his living mostly as a cabinet maker and woodworker building coffins and furniture. I think that is where Dad got his natural building abilities. Anyway, Grandpa Helton moved his family to Saline County sometime afterward and lived in Saline County until he brought a small farm (about 160 acres) in Perry County, near Petit Jean Mountain. Grandpa Like had in the meantime moved to Morrilton, 20 miles or so from the farm. He made a name for himself as a tinkerer. He built a steam-driven truck which made
the newspapers.

My GGGrandgrandfather was Andrew Peter Helton. He and Nancy had a daughter, Nancy Caroline Helton, who married George Simeon Like. Their daughter Maggie May Like married John Allen Helton. My grandfather, John and Maggie were 3rd cousins.

I have cousins, descendants of Andrew and Nancy, who still live in the Rutherford Co. area. Wayne Helton and his sister, Jean Helton Young, live in Woodbury, TN. There is an annual Helton Family Reunion in Woodbury in June. This year (1998) they're are having it in Morrilton, AR at my Uncle Joe Helton's house. Jean has done considerable research on the family lines. Perhaps, next year you could attend the reunion in Woodbury. There is a family cemetery, Jamison Cemetery, near Kitrell, TN. It use to be Jamison-Helton land. Andrew and Nancy are buried there. And Thomas and Nancy Liza also. (If my memory serves me correctly.)

Note: Andrew enlisted in the Rev. War and after the ware moved to Rowan Co., NC for 17 years. He then moved to Warren Co., KY, then to Washington Co., KY, and later to Monroe Co., IL where he applied for his pension in 1833.
