Winkler, Peyton Herbert (b. 11 NOV 1838, d. 3 DEC 1917)
Note: Peyton Herbert was born near Carthage in Smith Co., Tennessee. He was in Missouri when the war broke about between the north and south. He went to Tennessee and volunteered for service. He was soon made a lieutenant in Company B of the thirtieth Tennessee infantry. He was captured at Fort Donelson, near Nashville, when Gen. Buckner surrendered to Gen. Grant. He was later exchanged for a federal soldier. He later served under Gen. Bragg in the battles "Above the Clouds" on Lookout Mountain. He also fought in the battles of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga and Chickamauga. He was with Gen. Johnson in the retreat to Atlanta before Gen. Sherman. He was placed under the command of Gen. Hood with the southern detachment sent back to attach the rear of Gen. Sherman's army. In this engagement he was wounded in the thigh and lay on the battlefield all night on a pile of rocks where he couldn't move. He talked some federal soldiers to move him from the rocks but was left there until the next afternoon. His wounds were dressed by a federal doctor and given the news that he wouldn't live more than a week or two. However, he did get better and was taken to Johnson's Island, a federal prison, in Ohio where he remained for the rest of the war. After the war he returned to Nashville carrying his gun and sword. The family remembers him coming in on a crutch. He went into the grocery business and later became a mail carrier for all of Nashville east of the Cumberland river, then Edgefield for thirteen years. In 1892 he move his family to Cheatham County where he farmed until 1903. Later he returned to Nashville where he was an agent for Green Briar Nursery.

Peyton was member of the Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ. He was also a member of the John L. Nolan Lodge No. 543, I. O. O. F., and a member of Company B of the Frank Cheatham bivouac of the Confederate veterans.

Herbert Winkler, his son, remembers that his hearse was pull by two white horses.
