He came to Springfield, Greene Co, MO in 1855. He was appointed 2nd Lt.in U.S. Marine Corps o n 13 Dec 1857 and served on theFrigate Congress ofthe Brazil Squadron. He served on the friga te, Sabine, flagship of theexpedition to Paraguay. He traveled 800 miles up the Paraguay Rive r. Hisnext assignment he traveled again to South America , returning home in1861. He resigne d his commission and was arrested and imprisoned threemonths at Fort La Fayette, New York Har bor, and two months at FortWarren, Boston Harbor, where he was exchanged as a prisoner of war . Hewas a captain in the Confederat e States Marine Corps early in 1862. Hewas a staunch Demo crat and was elected Greene Co, MO, recorder of deeds.When he died, he lived on the Bolivar R oad.
