About Conrad Winkler, Sr.

Conrad, along with his brothers Jacob and Thomas (Conradt Winckler, Hans Jacob Winckler and Hans Domas Winckler), arrived in the Port of Philadelphia on the 24th of September, 1753. They sailed from Rotterdam on the ship Neptune, John Mason, Master. There were 146 male passengers aboard the Neptune plus women and children.

Some believe that Conrad Winkler settled near the present city of Granite Falls, NC, and that the immigrant Jacob Winkler lived east or northeast of Conrad in the Dudley Shoals area. Conrad Winkler, Sr. purchased 350 acres of land at the mouth of Drowning Creek, on the south side of the Catawba River (with an "entry date" of 7-27-1779) a short distance southeast of Granite Falls. A Jacob Winkler made land purchases on or near the Upper Litle River (North of the Catawba River) east of Granite Falls.

Rowan County, NC records reflect that Thomas Winkler bought land from Matthias Beaver, and his wife Susanna, on both sides of Clarks Creek, adjacent to John Willian. Dec. 20, 1767. He paid 30 pounds for 200 acres. This area became part of Burke County when Burke Co. was formed in 1777, later part of Lincoln Co., and part of Catawba Co. in 1842. Subsequent records show that Thomas Winkler and his wife, Ann Mary, sold 200 acres on both sides of Clarks Creek adjacent to John Killian on March 1, 1784.

CONC
There is much confusion and dispute concerning the origins of the Winkler family. There are missing links, dates that are not consistent, etc.Since much of my personal research which eve ntually has provide a link totruth has been taken from misleading information, I warn the rea der notto accept information as fact that has not been proven but rather use itto examine pub lic records and use thi s information as a source to startthe investigation.

Conradt's father was believed to be Conradt Sr. who migrated to Americafrom the Lower Rhine i n Germany. Conradt, with brothers Thomas and Jacobsailed on the ship Neptune from Rotterdam , Holland and arrived at thePort of Philadelphia, Pa. Sept. 24, 1753.- On June 9, 1764 in Lan casterCo. Pa. Conradt married Elizabeth Fischer,. - They lived in Burke Co. N.Carolina, the n to Washington Co. Ky. in 179. - In 1812 they went to OhioCo. Ky. Where they lived later bec ame Daviess Co.

Conradt Winkler (Winckler) came to the US Sept. 24, 1753 via Phila. Pa. from Rotterdam, Holland on the Neptune with his brothers Hans Jacob and Hans Thomas. Conradt had a son, Jacob in 1758 in either NJ or Burke, NC. Between that Jacob (or possibly Hans Jacob) and my great great grandfather, Abraham Winkler, who was born in Burke, NC and moved to Hancock County, Tennessee, there is confusion on the line between Conradt and his son and grandson. Ancestry.com shows incorrect information on their wives and dates. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who can clear this up. Abraham died in captivity shortly before the end of the Civil War, leaving his wife, Nancy Millikan Winkler with my grandfather and several siblings. I'm not able to complete my line of descent without the correct info on the "Jacobs" between Conradt and Abraham. I can be emailed at mw4427@@swbell.net

It is not clear at all concerning which Conradt or where this one belongs.

From Mrcie Svatek:

My ggrandmother was LaVina Winkler (b.1876 d. 1938 in Franklin, Texas)
My gggrandfather was Dave F. Winkler (b. 1833 d. 1900 in Texas)
My ggggrandfather was EITHER
D.T. Winkler (b. Germany d. 1856 Wheelock, Texas)
OR
David Tate Winkler (b. 1792 married Lavinia Owens) I know Lavinia Owens was the name of my ggggrandmother.

Then, is it true that my gggggrandfather was Conrad Jr. and his father was Conrad Sr. and his father was Hans? These older names were scribbled down in an old bible that my dad remembered when he was a child, but there wasn't any linkage between them. Also, I heard stories of them sailing across to America. Any help would be appreciated.
