No direct relationship has been found to the Pitts, Nolen, Boyd & Jamisonfamilies, however, J ohn Rucker assisted the family in keeping theRucker-Pitts Cemetery from being over run by dev elopers. Th e familywill ever be greatful for his support and assistance in this endevor. Th eRucker-Pitts Cemetery is on Coleman Road about a mile from the VetsHospital. The cemetery wa s the final resting pla ce for James Rucker Jr.,and is shared by the Pitts family. His famil y is recorded here inrespect for his assistance. John Richardson Rucker, age 93, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., died July 10,2009. He was born in Mur freesboro and was the son of the late AnnieRichardson Rucker and Ellis Suttle Rucker. He wa s preceded in death byhis beloved wife, Margaret "Betty" Wolfe Rucker, and his brother, Ellis Suttle Rucker, Jr. He is survived by his four children: Richard W. Ruckerand his wife, Sue Ru cker of Murfreesboro; Lib bi Rucker-Reed ofMurfreesboro; Debbie R. Combos of Franklin, TN; Jo hn R. Rucker Jr. andwife, Patty Rucker; eight grandchildren: Linda Long and her husband,Scot t Long; Shannon Rucker; Todd Reed and his wife, Karen Reed; LeeAnneRucker-Reed; Katie Combos ; Andrew Combos; John R. Rucker III and hiswife, Ann Elizabeth Rucker; and Anne Loy and her h usband, Josh Loy; andthree great grandchildren, Jo rden Reed, Kyra Reed and Aiden Reed.
John Rucker attended East End Grammar School and Central High School inMurfreesboro. Upon gra duation from high school in 1933, he immediatelyentered Cumberland School of Law in Lebanon , TN, graduati ng from lawschool in 1934. He passed the Tennessee Bar Exam in the summer of 1 934and was admitted to practice in the state of Tennessee on Sept. 15, 1934,at the age of 18 . In 1934, he began practic ing law with his grandfather,John E. Richardson, and enrolled a t Middle Tennessee State College. Hegraduated in 1938 and continued practicing law with his g randfather untilhe enlisted in the Armed Services.
John Rucker served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a gliderpilot. He remained i n the Air Force Reserves rising to the rank of fullColonel, prior to his retirement on Nov. 2 , 1975, at th e age of 60.After World War II, he returned to Murfreesboro and resumed his pra cticeof law. He continued in the law practice with his two sons, Richard andJock, until his r etirement in 1990.
In 1948, he was elected General Sessions Judge of Rutherford County andserved until 1962. H e was elected to the Murfreesboro City Council andserved as a councilman from 1962 to 1968. H e served as St ate Senatorfrom 1977 to 1989 and while serving as Senator, he was elected Spea kerPro Tempore of the Tennessee State Senate.
He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. He loved travelingwith Betty and was a n avid pheasant hunter.
Chapel services for Mr. Rucker will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2009at Jennings & Ayers Ch apel. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery withsons, Richard and John, officiating. Famil y and friend s will serve aspallbearers.

Former state Sen. John Richardson Rucker, 93, of Murfreesboro died Friday.
The Democrat served as state Senator from 1977 to 1989 and while servingas senator, he was el ected Speaker Pro Tempore of the Tennessee StateSenate.
Rucker was born in Murfreesboro and was the son of the late AnnieRichardson Rucker and Elli s Suttle Rucker. He was preceded in death byhis beloved wife, Margaret "Betty" Wolfe Rucker , and his brothe r, EllisSuttle Rucker, Jr.

Private John W. Fulks enlisted in on the Confederate Army on April 25,1861 at age 18. John se rved in the 2nd TN Infantry (Robinson's) until hewas captured near Peachtree Creek during th e battle of A tlanta. He wasthen a POW from at Camp Douglas, Illinois from July 19, 1864 unti l theend of the war. John was wounded twice during the War. The second timewas September 20 , 1863 at the Battle of Chi ckamauga, and he wasfurloughed for 30 days. He was also "slightl y wounded" August 30, 1862,in Kentucky.
The date of death from some records indicate: June 19, 1897 rather thanSeptember 16, 1897.
