Monroe Jamison, Jr., 52, passed away at his home in Abingdon on July 12,2007. Beloved husband , father, brother and son, Monroe was born to Bettyand Monroe Jamison, Sr. on March 23, 1955 , in Owensbor o, Ky. andgraduated from Ohio County High School in Hartford, Ky. He received a B.A. in English from the University of Kentucky in 1984 and a law degreefrom the UK College o f Law in 1987. He was an editor of the Journal ofMineral Law & Policy and was the recipient o f a fellowship from theInstitute of Mines and Minerals Resources Research Institute.
With his wife, Daveena Sexton, he moved to Washington County, Va. in1987, where he was employ ed by the Penn Stuart law firm prior to openinga private practice in Abingdon. At his death h e was employ ed as anAssistant Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Virginia.
An accomplished bluegrass musician himself, Monroe also originated bothThe Bluegrass Sample r radio show, for which he served as host for manyyears, and the Virginia Highlands Festival' s old-time and bluegrass musicweekend.
A former president of the Virginia Highlands Festival and the KiwanisClub of Abingdon, he wa s also the immediate past president of theWashington County Bar Association.
Monroe leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Daveena Sexton, and theirdaughter, Hannah Rebecc a Jamison, both of Abingdon; his mother and herhusband, Betty and Bernard Maupin of Beaver Da m, Ky.; his si ster and herhusband, Becky and Phil Wilder; his niece, Jessie Wilder; and nephew,Zach Wilder, all of Versailles, Ky.; his mother-in-law and father-in-law,Wanda and David M . Sexton of Whitesburg, Ky .; his sister-in-law andbrother-in-law, Stephanie and Michael Will iams of Sharps Chapel, Tenn. ;and a grieving community of musicians, colleagues and close frie nds whocherished his intelligence, war mth, generosity, quick wit and abundant talents.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 14,2007, at the Main Stree t Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon.They will also receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m . on Monday, July 16, 2007,and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at Danks Fune ralHome in Beaver Dam, Ky. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. onTuesday, July 17 , 2007 at Danks Funeral H ome with burial following at Sunnyside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the CancerOutreach Foundation, 20 6 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, VA 24211, or to theAmerican Cancer Society earmarked for research .
