liff LeBlanc

She was the object of the affections of Andrew Johnson, later President
of the United States. Johnson pressed for her hand but was repulsed by
her parents because of his poverty and lack of a formal education. Her
descendants still live in the Laurens area (1990's). The quilt made by
Sara Word and Andrew Johnson in anticipation of their wedding and a
tailor's "goose" iron given her by Johnson were donated to the South
Carolina Museum Commission by Col. Helen Whitley of Montgomery, AL and
her brother, Col. Owens in the late 1970's. After his rejection Mr.
Johnson quickly left Laurens for Tennessee where he subsequently became
involved in politics and succeeded Lincoln as President. Sarah married
Capt. William Hance and bore him 14 children, only four of whom survived
to maturity. Tragically, three sons were killed while serving with the
Confederate Army. A daughter lived.
