The following was taken from the official Lewis Grizzard web site(www.lewisgrizzard.com) :

Lewis was born in Fort Benning, Georgia, and only moved to Moreland withhis mother after
his father left both the Army and his young bride in a fit of despair andmystery that would h aunt
Grizzard to his dying day. The tremendous love and frustration he feltfor Captain Lewis McDo nald
Grizzard, Sr. finally overflowed,' typical Lewis style, in a book. "MyDaddy Was A Pistol an d I'm a
Son of a Gun" remains one of his most remarkable works, evoking tears andlaughter in such rap id
succession that the reader finally understands that they are oppositesides of the single coi n of
parenthood. Years later he penned his homage to "Miss Christine," (hislong suffering, tough , school
teacher mother), entitled "Don't Forget To Call Your Mama - I Wish ICould Call Mine." Togethe r
they form bookends to the entire Grizzard library, these sentimentalmelancholy, misty memorie s of
the Mama and Daddy from which he came. Lewis often told interviewers hewas raised "poor, prou d,
and patriotic. Stories of his childhood in Moreland ring with Americanarchetypes; the strong , quiet man (his maternal grandfather "Daddy Bun,"a farmer and school janitor who was the ins piration for Grizzard's famous"Definition of a Redneck"), the strong Southern woman who bend s but doesnot break (his mother, beginning life anew at age 40 after Lewis Sr.'sdeparture), t he fearsome school author ity figure (O.P. Evans, principalof Newnan High School), and of cou rse the girls, always the girls (KathySue Loudermilk and company).
