The Jamisons are said to originated in Scotland in the extreme north ofthat country in the ar ea Sutherland and Caithness, where they weremembers of the clan Gunn. The founders of the cl an were Nors eman. Thefounder of the clan was said to be a pirate who settled at Ulbster inCa ithness. His descendants and the Keiths were continually at war witheach other. The daughte r of Lachlan Gunn was car ried off by a Keith toAckergill, where she threw herself from the t op of the tower. In 1426the two clans fought a indecisive battle near Thurso. Another encou nteroccurred on the Muir of Tannach i n 1438; the Gunns were defeated. In1426 the clans agre ed to settle in a friendly way. The Keithstreacherously attacked and cut the Gunns to pieces . The greater part ofthe clan afterward migrated to Sutherland. From Henry Gunn the Henderso nsof Caithness descended. Sir William Gunn of this clan fought valiantlyunder Gustavus Adolp hus. In 1636, on the Plains Weslock, he was chieflyinstrume ntal in the defeating the Austri ans. Charles I knighted him forbravery. MacIan, in his Clans of the Scotch Highlands published in 1845 byAckerman Co., London f ound in the public library in Edinburgh said - -"Clan Nan Guinnaich or Gunns - The Gunns wer e in the nor th, thecounterpart of the MacGregors in the south. Although not numerous, theywe re most distinguished in very indicative of their general character.Guinneach signifies sharp , keen, fierce, and was doubtlessly imposed asdescriptive of their known dispositions. The de rivation of the clan isfrom Guin, second son of Clans or Ollar the Black, king of Man and the Isles, who died in 1237.

Thomas Jamison, son of John, was born November 7, 1732. He was a farmerand served in the Mili tia under General Washington. He fought through thecampaign of July 5, 1755 which resulted i n Braddock's defeat. He settledin Georgia after marrying Jane Dickey in 1756. She died in 176 3. He latermoved with his four children to Virginia, living near Charlottesville ata place ca lled Jamison's Mountain. He also lived on Pigg River inFranklin County. He died April 6, 1830 ."

p. 148. - Samuel Marshall married Cassandra Alfriend and settled on theheadwaters of Leatherw ood Creek. Issue: (1) Dennis, (2) Lewis, (3) John,(4) Ben, (5) Susan, (6) Sally, and (7) Nanc y. They spen t the remainderof their lives here and were buried nearby on the Wasley Griggs p lacewest of Dyer's Store.

There were four Jamison families in Virginia in 1784. These were: David,John, Samuel and Wil liam Jamison listed as head of households. It isbelieved by John H. Jamison who compiled "Jo hn Carty and 4000 Descendants1755-1978" that John married Susanah who was born in Virginia h ad theirfirst child "Julia" in Greenbrier Co., Virginia. They moved to Kentuckyand then move d to Missouri and later to Searcy Co., Arkansas. They had12 children. None of this family ap parently ever made it to Tennessee andwere apparently their children went on to Missouri an d never to be partof the Kentucky to Tennessee movement. It is unknown about David, Samuelan d William Jamison who remained in Virginia or what happened. It isunknown if any moved on t o Kentucky.

It is not proven that James is a part of this family. He may have been abrother to Peter Helt on instead of a son. He married Sarah Tennison whomarried second Andrew Carnahan. William Hel ton was the administrator ofher estate before his death. The will of Abraham Tennison, date d 1826,Rutherford Co., TN, names his daughter, Mrs. James Helton, and gives hera share of hi s estate.
