I have my Like ancestors back to Henry and Alse Mann Like. The familylegend has that Henry an d his brother came from Virginia/West Virginiaaround 1800, settling first in Putnam Co., Ohio , and later moving on toMichigantown, Indiana. I located his grave and those of his sons inL ayman Cemetery, north of Michigantown. About the time George Like,Henry's great-grandson, hea d south to Tennessee, G eorge's parents movedto Spickard, Missouri. George's brother worke d for Andrew Peter Heltonand George apparently joined him, where he met and married Nancy Car olineHelton. Sometime in the early la nd rush days of the 1890s in Oklahomaterritory. Georg e and family moved to Oklahoma and homesteaded land inWoods Co., Okla. My grandfather, John A llen Helton, headed out toOklahoma from Rutherford County, Tenn., around 1915 and found emplo ymentwith George. He soon married Maggie Mae Like and had a thrive wheatharvesting business d uring the 1920s before an accident injured hisback. In the mi d- 1920s, George and Nancy mov ed to Saline County, wherehe built a grist mill and a stream engine to generate electricity , thefirst in the area to have electricity. He earned his living mostly as acabinet maker an d woodworker building coffins and furniture. I think thatis where Dad got his natural buildin g abilities. Anyway, Grandpa Heltonmoved his family to Saline County sometime afterward and l ived in SalineCounty until he brought a small farm (about 160 acres) in Perry County, near Pet it Jean Mountain. Grandpa Like had in the meantime moved toMorrilton, 20 miles or so from th e farm. He made a name for himself as atinkerer. He built a steam-driven truck which made
the newspapers.

My GGGrandgrandfather was Andrew Peter Helton. He and Nancy had adaughter, Nancy Caroline Hel ton, who married George Simeon Like. Theirdaughter Maggie May Like married John Allen Helton . My grandfat her, Johnand Maggie were 3rd cousins.

I have cousins, descendants of Andrew and Nancy, who still live in theRutherford Co. area. Wa yne Helton and his sister, Jean Helton Young, livein Woodbury, TN. There is an annual Helto n Family Reun ion in Woodburyin June. This year (1998) they're are having it in Morrilton, A R at myUncle Joe Helton's house. Jean has done considerable research on thefamily lines. Per haps, next year you could attend the reunion inWoodbury. There is a family cemetery, Jamiso n Cemetery, near Kitrell, TN.It use to be Jamison-Helton land. Andrew and Nancy are buried th ere. AndThomas and Nancy Liza also. (I f my memory serves me correctly.)
