Word Samuel Doak [Male] b. 1832 Wilson Co., TN - d. ABT. 1875
Change: 17 JAN 2013

Sam is thought to have been a peddler during his early life. During his travels it took him to Indian villages around the country. Indianmaidens were not allowed to marry men of their l ocal family g roup due toobvious reasons of inbreeding. Most taboos are based on good logi c atthe time. In any case, the folks that traveled though the area becamecandidates for pot ential husbands for the mai dens. This is believed tohave been the way that he found his first wife, Edney. It is also believe that the maidens did not use a family name so it is unclea r howthe Edney Clifton got that name and her parentage relationship.

Family tradition indicates that Samuel met a young Indian girl and ranaway to North Carolina . This information is believed to be from Sue SmithKey of Gallatin, TN, grand-daughter of Aun t Belle. Ot her unconfirmedsources indicate that this young girl was a Crow Indian, however , proofof whether Crow or Cherokee is not known. Another source, i.e. AthelineEsteb died in Indianapolis in 1998 or 1999. Talked with her two orthree times with each time giving a l ittle more information but since sheis 87 (1997) she remembers very little and some of the in formation seems contradictory. She was one of about 9 children, most are dead. A brother Bill Allen lives near Lebanon, TN.

Etheline was th daughter of Corty Allen & Stella "Belle" Word?

Samuel is reported to be in army of CSA (Prvt "B" Co. 45th + 84th Inf CSA)
