She remembers when she was 9 or 10 that she loved blackberry pie. Oneday when her mother was up at the barn plucking feathers out of the geeseshe got into the blackberry pie and ate all she wanted. It made her sickas a dog and she went out and laid down on the bed of the wagon bed and lost it all. It was a long time after that before she could eat another bite of blackber ry pie. Today she is known for one of the best blackberry cobblers made. The author has provided his services many times to fix her computer for a blackberry pie.
She requested a poem to be written and read at her funeral. It is titled At Journey's End:
At Journey's End
Dear loved ones and friends
who gathered here,
Do not fret and do not tear.
These four walls do not bind me
Within this box, you will not find me
Far away I'm sure I'll be
Soon I pray you I'll see.
Where I am, you must choose to go
If you don't, you must know.
Near 93 years I've travel far
Some by train and some by car
Silver birds with silver wings
Many things have I seen.
Of five brothers I wasn't one
My life in Macon began in '21
Bess & Sallie had then begun.
After 6, they then were done
I left for Nashville when just a teen
Such a place, I'd never seen
With my cousin there my life began
Seeking new life, I found a friend
While looking for work at a drug store
I found that fiend and even more
There beyond a counter be
67 years, A love for me
We travel near and traveled far
We settle in Lebanon then by car
Our children numbered one, and then two
Grandchildren four just like new
And now my life has just begun
You think not, I followed the Son
He promised to go and make a place
Finer than gold or fancy lace
You too can find the only way
But for now you're here to stay
So plan well your days and follow the Son
Serve each day the only One
I've gone now, so do not wait
You too, will soon find your fate.
I bid you farewell, how nice it's been
I am now at my Journey's Begin.
