The following was taken from the official Lewis Grizzard web site(www.lewisgrizzard.com) :
zzard.com) :
Lewis was born in Fort Benning, Georgia, and only moved to Moreland withhis mother after
his father left both the Army and his young bride in a fit of despair andmystery that would h aunt
Grizzard to his dying day. The tremendous love and frustration he feltfor Captain Lewis McDo nald
Grizzard, Sr. finally overflowed,' typical Lewis style, in a book. "MyDaddy Was A Pistol an d I'm a
Son of a Gun" remains one of his most remarkable works, evoking tears andlaughter in such rap id
succession that the reader finally understands that they are oppositesides of the single coi n of
parenthood. Years later he penned his homage to "Miss Christine," (hislong suffering, tough , school
teacher mother), entitled "Don't Forget To Call Your Mama - I Wish ICould Call Mine." Togethe r
they form bookends to the entire Grizzard library, these sentimentalmelancholy, misty memorie s of
the Mama and Daddy from which he came. Lewis often told interviewers hewas raised "poor, prou d,
and patriotic. Stories of his childhood in Moreland ring with Americanarchetypes; the strong , quiet man (his maternal grandfather "Daddy Bun,"a farmer and school janitor who was the ins piration for Grizzard's famous"Definition of a Redneck"), the strong Southern woman who bend s but doesnot break (his mother, beginning life anew at age 40 after Lewis Sr.'sdeparture), t he fearsome school author ity figure (O.P. Evans, principalof Newnan High School), and of cou rse the girls, always the girls (KathySue Loudermilk and company).

One of the pioneer settlers of Kentucky and was a farmer. After marriage to Martha, they moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, and from there to Rutherford County, Tennessee, where the father died 11 Oct 1834. Martha and two daughters then moved to Haywood Co., TN where she died in 1853. Jesse was a member of the Baptist Church. He was a Whig. Barbara Hopper Garrison told me that their marriage is recorded in the records at the court house of Davies County, Owensboro, KY. Letter from James I. Rodgers dated 1954: "I can't help you much with our ancestry. My father never told me very much about his people and I was young and did not remember. His fathers name was Jesse. He was a baptist minister and his politics Whigg. He past on when father was 6 years old. There were 3 girls as I remember Martha, Matilda and Arie all born in Kentucky I think but I do not remember any address. Father run a wood yard on the Ohio river sold wood to the boats when a kid was an oversear of slaves on a plantation. Married Elizabeth Saunders in Tennessee at Murfisborro." Jesse immigrated from Scotland to SouthHampton, NY in 1780. (Long Island). NY Census of 1790 lists Joseph, Sr. (probably the father) with two sons: Jacob and Jesse. It shows Jacob having 5 boys and 2 girls. By 1799 Jesse is patenting land in Warren Co., KY - by 1834 in Barren Co. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Rodgers (1), was one of the pioneer settlers of KY. Jesse Rodgers (2) was married to Martha Jameson in Daviess Co. KY., 1821. After marriage they moved to Sangamon Co., IL., back to KY., then on to Rutherford Co., TN., where Jesse (2) died in 1834. Martha died in Haywood Co., TN. She was the daughter of William and Nancy Kirkham Jameson who were married 1796 in Woodford Co. KY.
