Peyton Herbert was born near Carthage in Smith Co., Tennessee. He was in Missouri when the war broke about between the north and south. He wentto Tennessee and volunteered for service. He was soon made a lieutenantin Company B of the thirtieth Tennessee infantry. He was cap tured atFort Donelson, near Nashville, when Gen. Buckner surrendered to Gen.Grant. He was lat er exchanged for a federal soldier. He later servedunder Gen. Bragg in the battles "Above the Clouds" on Lookout Mountain.He also fought in the battles of Missionary Ridge, Chattanoog a and Chickamauga. He was with Gen. John son in the retreat to Atlanta beforeGen. Sherman. H e was placed under the command of Gen. Hood with thesouthern detachment sent back to attacht he rear of Gen. Sherman's army.In this engagement he was wounded in the thigh and lay on th e battlefield all night on a pile of rocks where he couldn't move. He talked somefederal soldiers to move him from the rocks but was left there until thenext a fternoon. His wounds were d ressed by a federal doctor and giventhe news that he wouldn't live more than a week or two . However, he did get better and was taken to Johnson's Island, a federal prison, in Ohiowhere he remained for the rest of the war. After the war he returned toNashville carrying his gu n and sword. The family remembers him coming inon a crutch. He went into the grocery business and later became a mail carrier for all of Nashville east of the Cumberland river, then Edgefieldfor thirteen years. In 1892 he move his family to Cheatham County where he farmed until 1903. Later he returned to Nashville where he was anagent for Green Briar Nursery.

Peyton was member of the Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ. He was also a member of the John L. Nolan Lodge No. 543, I. O. O. F., and a member of Company B of the Frank Cheatham bivouac of the Confederate veterans.
