WORD, ROBERT EMMETT
This well-known cattleman of Western and Southwestern Texas was born near Egypt P. O., in Wharton County, Texas, on the 29th of October, 1842. His father, Col. Charles G. Word, was a farmer and stock raiser of the old school, and was born in South Carolina, October 17, 1814. He left that State when quite a young man and removed to Alabama, where he was married to Miss Mary W. Morton. In 1836 the young couple ventured to the far West, locating in Wharton County, Texas, but removed later on to Goliad County, where the husband engaged quite extensively in the cattle business. When the gold fever swept over the land he was one of the first to seek his fortunes in California, leaving his family in Texas and joining the rush of " '49ers," which has since become historic. He was in California only two years, then returning to Texas and the cattle industry. Nine or ten years later Col. Word organized the first company of troops raised in Goliad County, and at its head offered his services to the Confederacy. His promptness in this instance was typical of his character. In his long years of existence on the frontier, in his experience in the mining regions and in the Civil War, he was always found quick to plan and prompt to act, and such men are almost invariably successful in life. After following cattle raising in the southern counties for nearly forty years Col. Word moved, in 1873, to Chico, in Wise County, where he resided until his death, in 1879. His life, covering three quarters of a century, had been well and honorably spent, and his death was universally deplored among his many friends and acquaintances. He was twice married, and had children by each wife. Our subject was the eldest son, and his sister, Mary W., who afterward married a Mr. Hamilton, of Wise County, was the only other child by Col. Word's marriage with Miss Morton. His second wife, whose maiden name was Tippen, was the mother of six children, one of whom, Charles T. Word, is now the County Judge of Swisher County, Texas. His biography will be found in its proper place in this work.
In his boyhood R. E. Word attended the schools in Goliad County, obtaining a fairly good education. When not busy with his books and studies he found plenty to do on his father's ranch and farm. In this way his time was passed until after his nineteenth birthday, when he entered the service of his loved South-land, enlisting in Company K, of the 21st Texas Cavalry, under Capt. Martin M. Kenney. In the succeeding years, until the war ended, he saw all of the incidents and dangers that a cavalryman might wish to behold, and at the time of the final surrender found himself a man in years and experience, but without a profession or a dollar of capital on which to start in business. Returning to Texas he inaugurated his first business venture by starting with a bunch of mules to Kansas City, Missouri. He reached this point in safety, but found the market much less promising than he had expected, and was eventually forced to carry his mules to Arkansas before finding a purchaser who was willing to pay what he considered a fair price. He left Texas on this trip in 1866 and was away nearly two years. He had purchased the mules on credit, and it looked for a time as though it would prove a losing enterprise, but thanks to his careful management and tireless enterprise he was enabled on his return to meet his obligations and have a good profit left.
After this experience he decided to settle down as a farmer, and was married on the 25th of July, 1867, to Miss Emma Redding, of Goliad County. She was a daughter of William and Martha W. Redding, who had emigrated to Texas from Mississippi in 1849, the father dying the same year. Mrs. Word was then an infant, the youngest of several children, but the mother reared the family, educating them in the best schools of Texas, and to her untiring efforts all praise is due. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Word located on a farm, but Mr. Word soon grew dissatisfied, and when his corn crop had grown to be about knee high he left it and returned to the cattle business. He obtained a contract to supply beef cattle to a shipper at Indianola, but misfortune befell him, for the vessel which carried the first shipment sank, and in consequence he lost at least one-half the value of the cattle he had handled. Though crippled financially he was not discouraged, but continued to make a specialty of cattle dealing, raising, buying and selling, and handling cattle in every possible way, until 1871, when, in partnership with William Rush, he gathered and drove a herd of 1,700 beef steers to Kansas. They were forced to hold their cattle over the winter in Kansas, and owing to the severity of the weather they lost heavily. When they counted their herd in the spring fully one-half its number were missing, and Mr. Word found himself almost ruined. He returned to Texas sadly disheartened, and with his little remaining capital engaged in the butcher business, following it for two or three years.
In course of time he partially regained his losses, and once more began in the cattle business, but on a very moderate scale. From that time to the present he has continued his connection with the cattle industry, and has gradually built up to his present position. In 1881 he removed from Goliad to Williamson County, and was there two years, then moving to McCulloch County, where, in 1885, he assisted in organizing the McCulloch Land and Cattle Company. He was a member of this company for three years, and then sold out his interests and engaged in ranching alone, establishing himself near Milburn, in McCulloch County, where he still owns land and holds cattle. His ranch comprises 3,000 acres which he owns, and he controls two other tracts including in all about 15,000 acres of leased pasturage. He is not engaged in raising cattle at present, but buys young steers which he holds on his ranches to mature and fatten. He also buys and sells in a speculative way, and recently disposed of 1,000 head, which he had owned but ninety days, realizing a profit of $5,000. He usually holds and handles on his ranches about 3,000 head of cattle annually.
In 1894 Mr. Word moved to Brownwood, principally for the purpose of getting within reach of schools in which his children might receive a good education. Of the seven children which have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Word, four are living, namely: Robert E., Jr.; Nona, now Mrs. C. B. Hollifield; Thomas N. and Mendel B. Mr. Word has found Brownwood a very desirable point from which to conduct his business of cattle trading, and it is safe to say that his present location will prove a permanent one. He has a beautiful modern home-a handsome, two-story structure, furnished elegantly and comfortably, and since he can reside amid those pleasant surroundings and conduct his business more profitably than if living on the ranch itself, there is no reason why he should desire a change or find such a step necessary. She was the object of the affections of Andrew Johnson, later President
of the United States. Johnson pressed for her hand but was repulsed by
her parents because of his poverty and lack of a formal education. Her
descendants still live in the Laurens area (1990's). The quilt made by
Sara Word and Andrew Johnson in anticipation of their wedding and a
tailor's "goose" iron given her by Johnson were donated to the South
Carolina Museum Commission by Col. Helen Whitley of Montgomery, AL and
her brother, Col. Owens in the late 1970's. After his rejection Mr.
Johnson quickly left Laurens for Tennessee where he subsequently became
involved in politics and succeeded Lincoln as President. Sarah married
Capt. William Hance and bore him 14 children, only four of whom survived
to maturity. Tragically, three sons were killed while serving with the
Confederate Army. A daughter lived.
