From Kay Martin:
:
John BILLINGSLEY He was born on 10 September 1781 in Onslow Co., NC.Moved from NC to Sulliva n Co.,
TN with his parents in 1787. Married (1) on 10 Oct 1802, MarthaBLACKWOOD, b. NC 12 Mar 1786 . From a
published account in Biographical Album in 1808 and furnished by his son,Leander T. Billingsl ey, the claim is
made that John and his bride started from NC on a blind pony to findthemselves a home. They f inally reached the
Sequatchie Valley, Bledsoe Co., TN with a cash capital of one dollar andtwenty five cents. Th is marriage may have
taken place in NC but we feel that as no documentary evidence exists toprove it the logical p resumption is that it
occurred either in Sullivan Co., TN or or Washington Co., TN and that itwas from this point t he trip to Sequatchie
Valley was started. They located in Bledsoe Co., TN, cleared some landand made a crop with th e pony. During the
spring of the following year, the pony fell and broke it's leg and thesecond crop was made wi th a young bull.
Martha Blackwood died on 11 Mar 1829 and he married (2) on 15 Sept 1831to Jane HOODENPILE, b . NC 21
April 1812, d/o Philip Hoodenpile, a native of Holland. From a humblestart, John Billingsle y became one of the
wealthy and prominent citizens of Bledsoe Co., TN. He served some 40years as a member of th e County Court, and
part of the time it's Chairman. He also represented the County in theState Legislature. At th e time of his death 25
May 1856 his property was valued at $85,000.00. Jane survived him manyyears and died 3 Sept 1 894. The family
were Baptists. He and his two wives are buried in the Old SmyrnaGraveyard. The graves of Joh n and Jane are
marked, but that of Martha on his side is unmarked.

who loved to go to dances and such. Sam did not approve of this. He movedwest in the early 18 40's, and I do not
think he carried her with him.' He migrated to Arkansas about 1841/42 andlocated in Clark Co . and engaged in

Absolom and Lydia Castleman Tennison are buried in a Lawrence family cemetery on Rocky Fork Road in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Also Lydia's brother, Dallas, called "Unk" is buried there. We have been in a big hassle over that cemetery since January, 1998.A contractor bought the lot the cemetery was
on and proceeded to uproot the stones, bulldoze the fence and haul everything off. This was done even though Wil was telling them to leave it alone and hired a lawyer who told them to leave it alone. After itwas destroyed anyway, we sued and it eventually wound up as a Civil Action Suit.Last Spring, we settled for a little under $50,000.00.But the cemetery still has to be put back in some order to perpetuate the memory of those buried there. It will be in the front yard of the home they built there and the lady who bought the house is also suing the contractors. However, she knows that the cemetery is going to be put
back and is agreeable to having it there (not that she has any choice).Wil has many relatives buried thereand was very proud of the cemetery. To date, the money is still in the hands of the lawyers and of course, they will get most of it but there will be enough to put the cemetery back with flat bronze markers and
another large stone marking the cemetery. Also a wrought iron fence. We are hoping that we will be able to begin renovating it as soon as the weather gets better and the money is released.Just thought you might be interested in this since your grandparents are buried there.

Dear Mrs. James
Your December 12, 2000 e-mail regarding family history research on Andrew
Jackson Tennison, Sr. has been referred to me.
A search of our records indicate that Absolom did marry Lydia Castleman and
Andrew married Sarah Owen.Perhaps on Andrew's death certificate they
mistakenly put his wife's maiden name (Owen) instead of his mother's maiden
name (Castleman). Also, because the 1850 Census records list Andrew as the
son of Absolom and Lydia and the census birth year and death certificate
birth year match proves that Andrew is the son of Absolom and Lydia.
While researching our records I found a cemetery record for Lyddia Tennison
in the book Rutherford County, Tennessee Cemeteries Volume 1, prepared by
Stones River Chapter S.A.R. and Rutherford County Historical Society, at the
Lawrence Cemetery, birth date June 22, 1817 and death date November 10,
1903.Also, in our family history collection I have aTennis/Tennisson/Tennyson family history published in 1991 by Faye T.Davidson and donated to our library by Dorothy Norman Carl, 111 BosleySprings Rd., #510, Nashville, TN 37205.It is 156 pages and referencesTennisons of Davidson and Williamson Counties in Tennessee. You may want to try and contact Dorothy Norman Carl about this family history.
